Numerous adverse side effect reports have implicated Lipitor as a possible cause for severe neuromuscular degeneration. Some people who have been using Lipitor for two years or more report symptoms similar to multiple sclerosis or ALS - Lou Gehrig's Disease - in which they are losing neuromuscular control of their bodies. no vitamin supplement can stop the pain as long as you continue using the medication.

The supplement "red rice yeast" will take down cholesterol levels with no side effects. Vitamin C is still one of the best vitamins to take on a daily basis To help prevent heart attacks.

I would definately just call your MD, who will ask you to describe your pain and from that they will know if it's a side effect or not, and if so how serious.

I would have sworn had I had this, but when my MD asked me to describe it, the pain was totally different, likely due to my trying to regain more mobility (and muscles I haven't used a lot of lately hurting lol).

But it's not worth risking...just call and find out for sure. And I wouldn't advise self medicating to remove any symptoms until you are certain you are not having an adverse reaction to the medication. You definately don't want to risk any long term damage, so better safe than sorry IMHO.

BTW I've read both side of the debate if these meds help. My ultimate outcome was I then needed something for a headache lol! Seems like everyone can make a good argument and use data to prove both sides. Certainly feel free to read and come to your own headace--um decision hehe. I personally reached this conclusion. I completely altered my diet, which had virtually no affect on my cholesterol level which was out of control. I had blamed this on my Dad's side of the family, where I knew everyone had it, but not long ago found out most on Mom's do as well. Goody.

Since I couldn't alter it with diet or lifestyle, and my blood levels kept getting worse, I personally feel it's worth a shot since now they are in a range that is close to normal. My hope is that combined with a decent diet will help. I think it's at least a better shot than not doing it. But JMHO.

From the Lipitor website re: side effects:

Possible Side Effects of LIPITOR
Serious side effects in a small number of people:

* Muscle problems. LIPITOR can cause serious muscle problems that can lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure. You have a higher chance of muscle problems if you are taking certain other medicines with LIPITOR.
* Liver problems. LIPITOR can cause liver problems.
Your doctor may do blood tests to check your liver before you start taking LIPITOR, and while you take it. Symptoms of muscle or liver problems include:
o Unexplained muscle weakness or pain, especially if you have a fever or feel very tired
o Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain
o Brown or dark-colored urine
o Feeling more tired than usual
o Your skin and the whites of your eyes turn yellow
If you have any of these symptoms, call your doctor right away.

The most common side effects of LIPITOR are:

* Headache
* Constipation
* Diarrhea
* Gas
* Upset stomach and stomach pain
* Rash
* Muscle and joint pain

Side effects are usually mild and may go away by themselves. In clinical studies of 2,502 patients, 98% of LIPITOR users did not have side effects that stopped them from taking their medication.

Charlie Horse is the leg muscles responding to not enough calcium. If the bones aren't getting enough, they will take it from the muscles in order to fulfill their needs. Calcium is also necessary for healthy heart contraction. Might want to knock off the phosphates (sodas) which also deprives your bones from much needed calcium. Calcium/magnesium (nature's muscle relaxant) is a great daily nutritional supplement, and with the added Vit D, the calcium will be better absorbed. Do drink lots of milk as well.

Call your doctor immediately if you feel any muscle soreness while on statins! It's important. You may need to change your cholesterol medicine. My mother had to change to Questren, which worked very well for her.
