They are afraid of the light.

I can see several reasons that aren't exhaustive and which a person may or may not hold several at a time.

1). Scripture can be used to justify anything. It says in the Scripture "Judas hanged himself" "Go and do likewise." "What you do, do quickly." It's all in the Scripture, and all we have to do is string it together right. Granted, that's extreme, but the point remains. Usually, about 99% of the time, people don't draw their dogma from Scripture but justify it.

2). They don't want anything authoritative. They want to live their merry little lives only hearing opinions, but not anyone who would say "It's this way, and that's just the way it is." That is, they don't want a dogmatic opinion, but only ones that don't require too much conflict or commitment. Modern Western society is lazy and rebellious. It won't commit to anything.

3). They may not understand the Scripture, so they don't want people pounding them with it.

4). They may just disbelieve or dislike Scripture, and thus, don't want things justified in discussion using something they don't believe in or like.

There could be other reasons still. However, when they ask a Christian, Jew, or Muslim they should be prepared for it, because holy writings are an integral part of our thought.

Example: I am not Christian. I do not see the validity of the NT what-so-ever. I do not think it is the wrod of God, nor was it inspired by God. I do not think Jesus was the long awaited Messiah, let alone the son of God.

So therefore, quoting to me from the NT doesn't do a thing for me. I already don't see it as a valid source or sacred for that matter so why would I care about quotes from it.

Asking people not to use excessive quotes is not an impossible or demeaning request. It doesn't do anything for the unbeliever and it only makes the believer look like they can't think for themselves.

Christians say that there is ample historical evidence for Jesus. So why not use that, instead of just giving us long lists of quotes that most have already read and rejected?

Because many people who ask religious questions are not especially asking questions about the bible, so don't want quotes from the bible. They want to know what people THINK, without having to wade through multiple paragraphs of scripture quotes that don't have anything to do with the question.
Does that answer your question?

To me quoting scripture shows a lack of thought to the question that was asked. Anyone can quote, but do they really understand what they are quoting.

Plus if I ask it's because I want their thoughts and their words not someone else's.

Pay no attention to Joe C, he is inside of his own head.

Simple. Because believers always try to prove their foolish points by quoting the bible, but first they have to prove what is in the bible and they can not. That is why I will tell anyone of those suckers, if they want to offer proof, the bible is not proof of anything at all. Dumb is dumb, and to try to prove something by a book that can't be proven correct is even more dumb. Hope you got this correctly, and that Mormon Jesus is the same fictional character mentioned in the bible.

Giving advice and or answers to someone and they don't want the scriptures to back it up is because they know how they feel and Scriptures are Gods word and Gods word is truth, and the truth will always set you free...At the time they don't want to hear the truth..Blessings

Just because a person is searching for a spiritual answer does not mean that they believe the Bible is the word of God and offers practical solutions to our problem's today. And even if they do they are more interested in hearing a personal opinion without references.

Because they are not in the word of God so they don't want to hear that. They want to hear smooth thing and not the true answers according to scripture and not opinion.

They probably want to hear your opinion and not what the bible has to say. IE: they know what the bible says about it but what do you think about it.
If your opinion is the same as the scriptures then they should accept that also.
