It's not really a question of wanting to be an atheist ~ you either are a believer or you are not.
However.... that said.... if you really are not sure where you stand on this subject, there is a very boring sounding book (which isn't) called "An Introduction to Philosophical Analysis." by John Hospers. If you can find it at the library, just read the chapter called "The Philosophy of Religion." It will certainly get the 'ol grey matter going for you. It's rather an old book, but then so are all the arguments on this subject.
Knocked my socks off, anyway, years ago! The parts concerning the notion of a god who is omnipotent, omnicient AND benevolent interested me very much.
These things are less a studied decision than a sense of certainty, either way. Many atheists are actually extremely spiritual, which many people don't know. Good luck.
edit. You might want to look at Bertrand Russel's "Why I Am Not a Christian". Or just look for the subject on Google.

The simplest and easiest to read book is "A Letter To a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris. I would not start with Dawkins. He is very wordy and comes off a little pompous. Also read the bible with an open mind and try to think how life was back then. Remember, no newscasts, no newspapers, and reading was usually something that only the religious could do (very key point there!!!).

What is an atheist?
Its not a religion because they don't believe in anything, well if you want to be and atheist you just wont believe in anything.
But you better not, because there is God , and one day you will regret.

Here's a look inside Atheism 101...
No belief in God.
On second thought, that was the whole book.

In retrospect you are saying that if God is as real as the Christians believe he is you want a one way ticket to Hell.
If God isn't real then you have a one way ticket to the grave and no hope beyond the grave..
If you repent of your sin and let Christ rule and reign in your heart, you have a one way ticket to Heaven.
YOUR CHOICE WILL DETERMINE WHAT YOU GET SO IF YOU WANT TO DENY GOD AND FOLLOW THE PATH OF ATHEISM YOU WILL GET AN ATHEISTS REWARD. I AM NOT QUITE SURE I UNDERSTAND WHY SOMEONE OF EVEN SMALL INTELLIGENCE WOULDN'T AT LEAST BE SURE TO CHECK OUT EACH ONE THOROUGHLY. THE FATE OF ATHEISM ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE IS SCARY ENOUGH TO MAKE ME AT LEAST CONSIDER INVESTIGATING IT AS SERIOUSLY AS POSSIBLE.
