I am obese and has never been into sports....okay, not even exercising. But I do not want to make the same mistake with my daughter who is currently 15 months old. Can anyone suggest me what kind of sports, exercising facilities, diet etc. should I give her, so that she can remain as flexible and well-coordinated as a gymnast, so that if she wants she can take any sports as a career or at least does not lose her self-confidence and health like me.

I went to my local sports center and they said that I should wait for five to six years for any formal training and let my daughter play as she likes. I would like your advice on the subject too. Can anyone tell me what is the youngest age these sports persons start and whether it is a help or a hindrance? I like gymnastics but any sport that can keep her fit and fine is fine enough for me too.

Well first she could be pre-disposed but dont let that discourage you or her. Make sure that the whole family eats healthy (fast food as a treat no more than 1-3 times a month or less), vegetables with every meal, if you give her snacks 1-2 times a day make sure that at least half are a healthy snack such as cut up fruit, pretzels, etc, eat very little fried foots, cut back on red meat but dont eliminate it completely. Ok now the diet portion is over. Take walks to the park (if you have one nearby, this will be healthy for both of you) then let her run and play for a minimum of 30minutes to an hour before going home. On days when you dont want to go to the park offer ample opportunities for her to play outside and once shes big enough get her a big wheels bike she can ride on. As long as you give her ample opportunity and encourage outside play (also limit tv and videogame time) then she will grow up active and healthy, teaching her how to eat right is also extremely important and the younger you start that the better she will eat throughout her life. Good luck.
****FOR DEADBOLT - the first 5 years are the mostimportant in teaching them healthy eating habits, it is also when thigs like pre-disposition of weightgain, diabetes, and skin canser (which has nothing to do with this particular question) are decided within the childs body. IT is proven that children that are more active and eat healthier for the first 5 years and beyond have less weight problems and weight/food related health problems! It is important she start now on a healthy diet and exercise routine.***

Just take her down the park and try and run around with her, may help you too! You could take her swimming that would also help you. Anything walks in the country or where ever. You don't have to join her up at anything yet! However you could try Tumble tots if you must!
Good luck! Keep diet relatively healthy but dont treat her like she has a weight problem. My friend made this mistake and her child ended up underweight and the health visitor told her to go home and start letting him have the odd chocolate biscuit, instead of raisins!

Well the BEST thing that you can do for your child is to make sure that she learns good eating habits!! That is the BEST way to ensure your daughters health and not have her gain weight! If she likes to watch tv and tends to "snack" then instead of giving her the usual (chips, cookies, etc) make sure to give her HEALTHY snacks. Like my children like to watch movies but I always have a plate of green peppers, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, etc. Just do your best to promote healthy eating habits!

Also remember that your child is going to learn from YOU and from example so perhaps TRY and change your diet and exercise habits too!!

Take her to a playground and let her play, chase after her when she runs, you'll loose weight yourself. When my daughter was small I started an exercise program for myself, she loved being a part of it as it resemled "dancing". Get some exercise videos that have aerobics/jazz dancing/etc and have her join you.
