PLEASE! Do me a favor and don't listen to "WORD UP G". It all basically amounts to the fact that the US thought there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Saddam was a horrific leader at best and the US thought he we was an immediate threat. By the US, I mean the house of representatives, the Senate, AND President Bush. Most of them viewed the same intelligence as Bush when making the decision. Now, the war is unpopular so they need a scapegoat. Who better to blame then the president. Anyway, So basically we invaded Iraq because we thought they were an immediate threat ... which later turned out to be wrong.
I hope this answers your question ... at least partially.

Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq began in 1978. From 1978 to 1991 he committed numerous aggressive acts and had oil wealth to fuel more. In 1990 he invaded and conquered Kuwait and threatened Saudi Arabia. Bush 1 assembled a coalition to return Kuwait to sovereignty, which was accomplished in one of the most decisive complete campaigns fought in the 20th Century--but it wasn't enough for some people who thought we should have pushed on to oust Saddam even though doing so would break apart the alliance which included such notable enemies of the US like Syria.
Between 1991 and 2003 Americans and British warplanes maintained steady vigil and control over 2/3 of Iraq. But there was a growing neo-conservative intellectual group called the "Project for a New America" that had the ousting of Saddam as one of their chief tenets. In 1998, several leading civilian military intellectuals (including Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, William Krystal, Karl Rove, Lewis 'Scooter' Libby, Donald Rumsfeld, and Richard Armitage) petitioned Bill Clinton, then President, to move forcefully and oust Saddam even though there was no direct provocation.
Once George Bush was in office, the neo-conservative, new America were bent on using any provocation to invade Iraq. 911 provided them the means to achieve their end--they could sell a war built on lies to the American people.
That's how the war started. A group of men got together and thought it would be a cool idea and as soon as anything happened, our young men were going to be occupying Baghdad.

The President had intelligence that Saddam Hussein was building a nuclear and/or chemical arsenal (wmd: Weapons of mass destruction).
He thought it advisable to attack before the aforementioned wmd was complete. Congress supported him.
