Last night I took my daughter to shop for a gift. Her friend @ daycare we know absolutely nothing about is having a b-day party. I was thinking of spending no more than $15. I was always taught that if you get invited you should bring a gift as courtesy. Unless maybe they said it was ok not to. Even then I still tend to. After about 30-45 min in 1 store (while my daughter's dad waited in the car w/baby, who was sleeping) I decided to go to another store. It just so happens that my daughter's dad/bf works @ this other store. We got there and he just acted like he was upset and said "why don't you just get her a card and put $5 in it. Are you going to invite them to her party. What if they don't get her anything?" In the end I spent $10 on a Barbie pool my daughter picked out. What I'm wondering is what are your opinions on gift giving? Is he right? I guess we really don't know this little girl or her parents. Although my daughter talks about her sometimes.

You were right. The birthday child wants a gift, and that is the polite thing to bring when one is invited to a birthday party. The Dad was wrong in wondering if your child would get one back in return. That is irrelavant. The amount of money to be spent is inmaterial also, you spend only what you can afford, and get the best gift you can within that amount. I think buying the the toy your daughter picked out for the gift was very smart! Who knows better than another girl what is popular! I think you did absolutely right all the way! Your a great Mom!

If your daughter is going to a birthday party for this girl then the proper etiquette is to buy a gift (around $10-20) for that child. Even though you may not KNOW this child or her parents personally they HAVE invited your child to attend a party. For that party they are spending money on YOUR child.. (cost of food, party favors, venue, cake, etc)...so it is only polite to buy a gift in return for the child!!

However... if its just a friend at school who is bringing cake and ice cream to celebrate AT SCHOOL and there is no party that your daughter was invited to then you are in NO WAY expected to buy a gift for that child!! You can if you WANT.. but there is no reason that you HAVE to!

Hope that helps! :)

Your instincts to get a gift anyway, are the right ones as far as etiquette is concerned. Putting $5 in a card would have been tacky, but a nice gift certificate for a store appropriate to the child's age would have been acceptable.

If it were me and I didn't know the child or the parents I probably wouldn't have accepted the invitation to begin with. Just because your child is invited doesn't mean they HAVE to attend especially at this age.

you were right- you do need to buy a small gift, if you decide to attend.
