He got out by accident once before and seemed to like it, so I opened the door for him. Now he just sits and stares at open door even though he won't go out now and yet spent many days tearing house apart to get out again! Is he just a control freak? What is up with this cat?

(English is not my first language and I am very tired, so please excuse if I make mistake.)

Bad kitty! Bad!

None of the answers are correct and good reason why they should not have a cat.
Your Cat wants to go outside, period. That is a Cat's world, outside.
But YOU have made a prisoner of your Cat.
Your Cat's angst, trepidation, fear, is of the unknown, the outside.

You are impatient. Leave your door open. Better yet, get a Kitty Cat door.

My Cat was beloved and lived a good life as a Cat should. She was free to come and go as she pleased.

Since she was not declawed she was able to be what she was meant to be, a cat, a predator, and defender of her turf.

I have zero respect for someone that makes a Cat into a possession, like a toy doll. People like that don't deserve to have a Cat. They would disagree, but the truth is the truth.

The Cat will go outside and explore, a little at first then more and more as the Cat becomes acclimated back to it's habitat.

Well if your cat is not spayed or neutered, do so, best for the cat & it might help..leave breeding to the PRO'S...or could be he is wanting your attention as well, check to make sure he has food, water & a clean littler box...cats are very finicky & clean... could also be he don't know what an open door means..he got out by accident the first time..so it's not a habit for him to go out & he don't understand...TC & Peace :)

Maybe kitty is bored or wants some of your undivided attention. He could have had a bad exprerience while outside before and he's thinking twice about going out again.

My cat does semi negative things when she wants attention
or food
Good luck

Dogs go to the door when they want out.

Cats go to the door when the want the door open. They do not necessarily want to go out; they just want you to open the door.

Cats being explorers and hunters have a good understanding of portals and how they affect point of view. Have you ever watched people go by who did not notice you standing in a doorway?

How old is he? Is he neutered?

He may feel the urge to go out, especially if he's not castrated, but once he sees the door open he thinks 'agh! big scary world!' Also if he has been out before it's possible that something scary happened to him that he's remembering when the door is open.

Well, cats are sometimes not active or hyper enough to play around outside. Maybe it just wants some air or sunlight. Cats are usually lazy but they are fun to play with. Female Cats act VERY hyper and usually tares stuff apart to get outside. Males are not that hyper. Maybe you should be with your cat and pet him for a while then he or she will go out.

sounds like my cat. He stands at the door to b let out and when u get there, he's changed his mind.
He 'd go thru this 1000 times a day if I'd let him so now i let him out when i get up and he can wait, otherwise he'll rule ur life

He probably just wants attention from u. Also, he might only want to look outside, not go there in.or maybe hes scared of something and doesnt no if he should face his fears or stay safe inside
