Its founder,William Booth, once said:"I want my religion like my tea - hot".It was this zealour desire to carry his religion to the people,no matter who or where they might be,that caused Booth to part company with the lethargic orthodox churches. That was in 1861 when he was forced to leave the Methodist church because of his crusading activities. But Booth continued to preach everywhere - in tents, stables, theatres, saloons
-wherever he could find people that would listen to his message."It was not his plan to found a church",an official Salvation Army publication reports."But when he attempted to send converts to the churches, they did not feel at home because of their poor appearance. So Booth established Christian Mission centers for these converts" in the East London slums. That was 1865.These centers grew rapidly and in May,1878,those attending became known as the Salvation Army.

This religion was started around 1878 by William Booth, a Methodist minister who founded his ministry for poor and uneducated who felt unwanted in so-called "respectable" churches. It is a church that expresses itself through social services.

The American Rescue Workers and the Volunteers of America are two of its off-shoot religions/organizations.

The Salvation Army began in 1865 when William Booth, a London minister, gave up the comfort of his pulpit and decided to take his message into the streets where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute.

"While women weep, as they do now, I'll Fight; while little children go hungry, as they do now, I'll Fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I'll Fight; while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I'll Fight, I'll fight to the very end!"
