You see the question on here all the time by people who are wanting to starve themselves. Frequently the lil girls say they know its bad for them but don't care if they can lose weight.
When you know (b/c the proof is posted in every book, by every answerer on here) that you can't lose weight by starving--why is it easier to believe you should starve yourself, than to work out and eat healthy?
Why does merely starving yourself sound like the right idea? People who have years of experience all day how dangerous it is and how it doesn't work--thats on here every hour.
But why (with no proof and no medical experts on your side) does starvation sound like a decent choice or even a successful way to lose weight?

Where are all the people who mention that stuff all the time? I want to know why this sounds reasonable when you post it. You talk about starving yourself--now come and defend it.

Starving yourself does cause weight loss, but that doesn't mean fat loss. It causes muscle/bone loss, which makes the person appear thinner and lighter on the scales. What they don't realise is that their body fat percentage may well be going up. The reason for this is that the more muscle/bone they lose and the more fat their body holds on to, this increases the percentage of their weight that is from body fat.
And if that wasn't bad enough, when they gain the weight back it's mostly fat, so they end up fatter than they were before. Not very clever if you ask me!
HTH : )

Because people see anorexics on tv and in magazines, and so obviously you CAN lose weight by starving yourself if you commit to it, and stick with it. Of course, your metabolism will tank, so as soon as you eat ANYTHING you'll gain it back, but there are people who live off of practically nothing for years. That is, until their hearts give out at an early age.

It sounds right since we equate weight with food.
However, if you are starving, your body slows metabolism to save you.
In years gone by, it was not uncommon for people to gain 40-50 pounds every summer, just to lose it every winter when food was scarce.
Yes, you will eventually die without food. There is only so much a body can do to save itself when it has no nutrients or calories.

I think they do it because it is a "quick" answer for the weight loss delimma...t.v. and media and such does weird things to the minds of adolescent girls who think that they have to look a certain way to "fit in" or be happy...very sad!!
