I don't know about tents, but if you put a mylar cover over your hiking umbrella (you do have one don't you?) you'll be hiking in the cool shade all day.

No way! if you want to keep a tent cool, pitch it in the shade. if there isn't shade available throw up a tarp. it will be a lot more durable than the foil and provide better results. two things keep tents cool. 1 shade and 2 ventilation. Tin foil doesn't breathe and it will reflect the heat that is generated in the tent back into the tent.
think of this... if you wrap a potato in tin foil in order to protect it from the heat of a hot oven, what is gonna happen to the potato? yeah, the same with your tent.
buy a good tarp!

Use some space blankets and tape them on. What works better is to rig a simple fly (just a piece of cordage and a light cloth) over the tent to keep it shaded with air space between fly and tent.

Flat white is the most reflective color . Aluminum foil might work but would be kinda noisy and hard to keep on in a good wind. It may look kinna odd as well.

There is a product that is silver on one side and red on the other that many campers use for the purpose you mentioned. I don't remember the name of it. I have one but have never used it. (Look on Campmor.com or REI.com)

It's also good to put under the tent before setting up, I think.
I think the "red side" is on the ground, I don't remember.

Not tried it, but i used to have a silver dome tent and that was always pretty cool in the summer.
