He has ALS, amyotrpophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease). It renders your body virtually useless. There is no cure.

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Its a genetic problem often with the SOD-1 (Superoxide dismutase) protein. All the motor neurons gradually die (except for his eye muscles which are never affected). While he has had the disease for a long time, its not THAT surprising. The disease that others are thinking of that people die faster is probably Multiple Sclerosis which is a different disease altogether.

Hawkins has ALS or Lou Gehrigs Disease,

Hawking has Lou Gehrig disease. He is a wonder because no one has lived as long as he has, It is usually fatal. ALS (Lou Gehrig's) is a disease that affects the nervous system resulting in a steady deterioration of motor skills.
