Wouldn't you rather have people make you laugh instead of giving you something inspirational, religious, heartwarming, and so corny and sentimental you just want to vomit? No offense meant, just a question.

I live in fear that someone will give me a Chicken soup for the whatever soul book one day, and I'll be forced to burn a book for the first time in my life.

Natalie, I couldn't give that book to anyone I liked, that would be cruel and unusual punishment.

I would rather people give me something that lasts instead of something that makes me laugh for a moment.

Quite right too!

I prefer friends who make me laugh at myself, or slap me around in order to get me over the rough times.

I have just come out of a really rough time in my life ... my friends were always there when I needed them, they were supportive, but nobody ever tried to "inspire" me. They are more tough-love than chicken-soup kind of people.

At one especially scary point, when I was hiding from making what was so obviously the right choice, a wonderful woman told me I was being stupid ... far better for me than offering me chicken-soup!

Ugh, I hate glurge like Chicken Soup for the whatever. I would much rather someone take me out to see Talledega Nights or Hot Fuzz than give me a book full of glurge, half of which has already been emailed to me.
But if you get one don't burn it. See if you can return it to Barnes and Noble with a "I lost my receipt" then you can buy yourself a Calvin & Hobbes book.

I agree with you whole heartedly. In every possible sense. I really do not find spiritual or religious 'quotes' or 'uplifting' comments very helpful at all.

When I am depressed, which happens a lot, if I want anything its either to be alone, to be with some friends and muck about, or be with one person and have a heart to heart. Nothing religious or spiritual please, because in such a state, one is ill equipped to make informed desicions.

I suppose perhaps Atheists and Agnostics ought to get together and preach non-theism to depressed Christians. "There there, simply open your eyes to nihlism and you will realise that your sadness means nothing, come, embrace the finitness of life and live it"

Our sense of humor is one of the things that sets human beings apart from other sentient beings -- although you can see plenty of evidence in the animal kingdom that all sentient beings want to be happy, joyous and free from suffering. And, who knows what other "big brains" like dolphins and whales are saying to each other? Maybe they're all having a good laugh at our expense!

Yes, make me laugh, please! I'm a practicing Tibetan Buddhist in the Gelugpa lineage and one of things I give thanks for daily is the terrific, good-natured sense of humor that has characterized our teachers -- from the current Dalai Lama (who cracks jokes and cracks himself up when giving teachings) all the way back to Padmasambhava who was noted for poking fun at himself and cracking jokes 1,500 years ago!

All of the things you mentioned can be found together. Religious and sentimental does not mean lacking in humor.

I'd like a bit of both, something based on religion and something to make me laugh.
