If you have a difficult time with making correct choices, or staying in touch with reality, or are filled with self-loathing, religion can be a way to find a lot of comfort. It also provides a structure within which you can try to live your life. It provides forgiveness and offers a relationship with someone who is all powerful. I've known many people who went through very difficult times in their lives and turned to religion to help them with despair. When they turned their lives around, often the religion was able to take a more minor role in their lives. If you lived with schizofrenia, or extreme bi-polar syndrome, I can see how religion would be a place to turn to.
