Car antennas.
Spiked leather belts.

Seriously, spankings should be delivered with an open palm in most cases. Use something else if you must, but choose something BEFORE you get angry, and keep in mind that you don't want to use something likely to break bones, draw blood or cause any serious injury.

Most CAN be abusive. A lot depends on the "parent" applying them.
I've heard of many "implements" used, and have felt a few.
A lot depends, too, on the age and disposition of the kid/teen.
Palm of hand on seat of trousers can be quite effective, especially on younger kids.
Teens -- many never need a "spanking"; others respond better to dad's spanking of son's bare butt.
Still, always within reason! Belt on bare butt; OUCH!!! But it does make an "impression" and a message is conveyed -- parents, make sure you are conveying the RIGHT message. And 'belt on bare butt'; yeah; but never belt BUCKLE!!!
Likewise, a belt or strap on a 13 year old; IF NEEDED. Not something fearsome like a razor strop. Though that MIGHT be effective and reasonable on a 17 year old who has been drinking and driving, etc.
As some have said, NEVER nail-studded paddles, etc.
The "spanking" is, I've been told, supposed to HURT [and it sure does!!!]. But it is not supposed to HARM (injure)!!!
Rather than trying to decide just how "severe" you can spank; rather, have a parent-child relationship such that you are trying for the gentlest spankings as infrequently as possible.
As another said "I just remember thinking - boy I aint doing that again because I don't want my butt to sting!" ... and most anything can make it STING! ... while being whacked and a few minutes after. Some remember the sting for a long time; others just remember being spanked but sort of forget how much it did sting ... so we do something "stupid" again and get the necessary "reminder" -- YEOUCH!!! But, no big deal, even for my butt.
There are many ways that parents can be ABUSIVE without laying a hand on their kids. A serious licking with belt or brush isn't necessarily "abusive" though it will hurt/sting "big time". But be certain you do NOT injure!!!

I was spanked and have spanked my kids and the any other that I thought needed it. To not be abusive (from the bible I go by) it has to be done on the rear end. Don't use your hand. I would use something firm, but thin( ruler works). My mom uses a wooden spatula. One hit is fine if you know it will sting- more needed if child is tough. You'll know. This may all sound just horrible to some people, but you asked and I am probaly the only one who had the guts to really tell you. If this is done right you will not hurt or scar the child for life. I wasn't. I just remember thinking- boy I aint doing that again because I don't want my butt to sting! I turned out fine and don't hate my parents. Spare the rod and you will definately spoil the child and possibly ruin their life.

In my view, if you bruise or leave lasting marks it's abusive. So hand spanking going too far can be abusive but a mild belting it does not.
A spanking must finish with a red and stinging bottom but never go further no matter what you're using.

Using anything other than your hand, should never be used. Some parents don't know the limits to spanking, and that is where abuse becomes an issue.

it is not in the implement but the one who is implementing, a hand can do as much damage as a wooden paddle, it is being under control when spanking and not spankin gout of anger or rage

I think that spanking implements are horrible. Spanking itself is not good. There are far more ways to punish a child and ways that are more effective.

that is a good question with many answers. In my opinion, a spanking is done with nothing other than an open hand on the bum. Anything you pick up is a weapon. Hair brushes, belts ,wooden spoons anything!

Well, lets just say I recently got it with a Birch by my Dom and I thought it would be abusive, but I was wrong. It was used in the old English ritualistic way. 12 sets of 12. 144 in all and I was marked well and it stung horribly, but I was so aroused by it, like you wouldn't believe!

Here is the way I decided what to use. I would take the item in question and spank my own hand with it. If it actually hurt, I would not use it.
