You specified "sending by e-mail" as the end-use of the pictures. In that case, 2MP is the correct answer.
Even 2MP is too large for e-mail. With the average computer screen size being 1 or 1.5 MP, do you really need to send people pictures that take up 2 screens when viewed full size? But, these days that's often the lowest MP setting that a camera can do.
You could go through the trouble of reducing the pictures before sending them through e-mail. Your friends and family will appreciate your foresight in not clogging their e-mail with giant pictures that are slow to download.
Consider online photo sites like Google's Picsa and Flikr. They will allow you to upload your pictures, build albums and then just e-mail a URL to people to visit to see the pictures. That's a lot less work than reducing and e-mailing the pictures, your friends and familiy will appreciate you not filling up their e-mail box and it's a lot more fun!

Well, 2 megapixels is pretty good enough. 3 megapixels and 5megapixels have basically the same effect. If you would like to send it via email, you can resize it in photoshop or download an automatic photo resizer. I recommend resizing it to 1megapixel.

Your scanning determination is genuinely desperate by utilising 2 issues, the size of your unique image and the needed print length you want to make from the test, the two now or interior the destiny. I continually attempt to examine at a call which will supply me a pair of 36 MB record length so as that i will make prints as much as approximately 11x14. you could save them as JPEG's to save HD area yet until eventually you have an option to allow you pick the quantity of compression (the less you employ the extra valuable) you could desire to be dropping rather some information doing that so saving as Tiffs may well be a extra valuable determination.

Always shoot at best resolution possible in case you want a big print. You can always down-size a digital photo later, in the computer.

5 megapixels. Reduce the size if your planning to e-mail it say 800x600 or 1024x768.
