Sometimes people need to experience unpleasant emotions in order to move past them.
Telling him to cheer up, or that God has a lesson in his suffering, or that God only makes those he loves suffer, or that we are never given more than we can handle are all the WRONG things to say.
Start by listening to this person. Allow plenty of time for silence. Don't give advice. Just affirm what he is feeling. The best thing you can do is be a good listener and a nonjudgemental friend.

Funny question... because one would thing a religious man wouldn't need HIS sprirots lifted... rather more non-religious men would need methods to raise an otherwise unseen spiritual life. I will assume the method is the same for both, so my reply is to put the "fear of God" into them to make them "believe" in it, but to make people really "see" God, then you simply give them assistance in a time of need, and "show" them God's love. Many people who have received that type of assistance and go on to make successful lives, say they never forgot how someone helped them at their time of need, and that is how the love of God gets passed along. It is not hard, it is not a secret, but there's just not enough of it. Alot of fear, but not much assistance to needy.
(This is why rich men can't "see" God, because they never "need" any assistance.)
