familysearch.org is a good site .Its run by the mormons and is free so worth a go .I have found a lot on it .Good luck

all depends on what info you're looking for. there are so many places to look. newspaper archives, church records, county records, s.s. death index. the list goes on. there is a site called cindi's list of geneology sites in the internet. it has a list of lots of places to look. many cost $ but if you are doing history it's a good place to start. my sister did this for 20+ yrs.
oh yeah, you can also type in his last name and then message boards. you may get a hit. good luck in your search.
EDIT- the person above me has a good one. the mormon church has more records than you can imagine. i can't believe i forgot that one.

Ancestry.com is a good site to find vital records such as any service dates, wedding dates, cities lived in, etc. Good luck!
