The United Kingdom includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain is the island containing England, Wales and Scotland.

England is the largest country of both the UK and GB.

Contrary to what someone wrote above, Canada, Australia, etc. are not part of the UK. They are commonwealth countries but are not part of the UK.

The correct name for the United Kingdom is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.

Great Britain consists of the three separate countries of England, Scotland and Wales. These three countries are joined as one island complete with many smaller offshore islands.

Northern Ireland is a separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea and is attachd to the larger island of Ireland. It's much the same as the way Alaska is attached to Canada even though it's part of the US.

Each of the four countries is very different, they have their own history, traditions, cultures and language. English is spoken throughout the UK but some Scots also speak Gaelic, some Welsh people speak Welsh and some Irish people speak Irish Gaelic (similar to Scots Gaelic).

Just as each state in the US has it's own capital so too do the four countries of the UK. The capitals are: Northern Ireland - Belfast, Wales - Cardiff, Scotland - Edinburgh. As well as being the capital of England, London is also the capital of Great Britain and the UK.

The government of the UK is in London, in addition the countries of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also have their own 'mini governments' with limited powers. Again, it's similar to the US which is governed from Washington but each state has it's own administrative powers.

From an earlier answer...

Simply put...

Great Britain (Britain) =
England - (country, capital = London)
Wales - (principality and country, capital = Cardiff)
Scotland - (country, capital = Edinburgh)

United Kingdom =
Great Britain +
Northern Ireland - (province known as Ulster, capital = Belfast.)

Commonly known as -
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Southern Ireland - (country/state known as Eire and The Republic of Ireland, capital = Dublin) has not been part of the United Kingdom since 1922, so those who say that Ireland is part of the United Kingdom are not wholly correct...
