Money is only appropriate if they have a money tree or container there for donations. Otherwise I wouldn't. I sure appreciated any that I got when we got married though.

If friends of yours have just announced their engagement you are NOT obligated to give them a gift. If you are invited to an engagement party you are NOT obligated to buy the engaged couple a gift BUT if you wish to take a gift to the engagement party make it something small like a bottle or wine or a bottle of champagne or a picture frame (for their engagement photograph). Do not give this couple money or any type of gift certificate as an engagement gift, it is not appropriate. Answered by: A Certified wedding specialsit /

Depends on the couple... I'm sure some would prefer a more sentimental gift, but I've heard the trend is more towards giving money for both engagements and weddings. The mentality toward that is that you are finantially helping to make the couple's big day possible. Just think about how expensive weddings are today, plus honeymoons! But just make it clear that you want it put toward the wedding or honeymoon so it isn't just spent on food or gas or something.

An engagement gift? It's not required and shouldn't be expected. That would entirely be up to you if you want to give a gift. I'd save your money for a money gift at wedding time. For now...offer support and see if there is anything you can do to help.

well in my opinion i think a gift is a great idea money may be appropriate if ...
1. you get a very nice card to put it in.
2. you could get a gift card.
3. roses work wonders and like wise with chocolate (sure its old fashion but trust me it don't hurt)
4. if you know what kind of perfume or Cologne your lover likes that could work too i recommend (sun moon and stars for women) and for men you cant go wrong with black suade
(if you do give money it might not hurt to mention that you didnt know what he/she would like)
hope this helps chow

Yes and yes. Money is always appropriate. Studies have revealed 80% of gifts are unwanted. Either give them money or ask them what they want (and give them that).

No, a gift is not necessary for engagement. There's enough to come....
