Because it's a "Foreign Legion". It's also a way for people of other countries who have had problems in life to get a fresh start. You can change your identity in the legion. The French gain for obvious reasons. If you've had bad financial or criminal downfalls in the past, it's a way to get them cleared and "restore honor" in your life.

They are mercenaires. Like our troops are becoming. I fought. I enlisted. My father did also. The French Foreign Legion is an army for hire.

I don't understand what you are driving at if you already know it is made up with foreigners.
All I can add is they are the "French Shock Troops" who are sent in first, often to places where the French people would not want their own boys to go.

Perhaps to the French....they are easily expendable.

Probably don't feel half as bad if a non-frenchman died.
