Which branch?

It's your typical life... Go through accelerated basic training, depending on the branch, then serve where the military told you to go. Lucky ones join MP and stay on the main island. The unlucky ones got posted to the outlying islands and such. General life is normal discipline, not too rough, not too easy. The NCOs know these kids aren't in for life, but they have to be trained adequately.

My friend was conscripted (it is still too early for all-volunteer forces) into the R.O.C.s army, and spent two boring years (now it is more like 18 months) posted on Jinmen (or was it Mazu?), watching the stars at night. I guess there's really not much to do out there - on "the first line of defense."
