My guess. . .having grit is having gumption so crystal is clear so clear cut gumption. On the other hand a knife edge of a doze could imply that dozing or not paying attention could be big trouble and crystal grits would be an oxymoron about a blob of grits or things are not clear and crystal just emphasizes or is sarcastic about not being able to think clearly. Interpretation is up to the reader. I think you should shoot who wrote it. . .
