How do you know what the truth is? Do you assume what the truth is, or believe what your parents taught you?

I personally am torn between three religions at this time. Christianity, Theistic Satanism, and Paganism.

I think all three are mixtures of truth...

I'm asking you if YOU assume what your parents taught you is true, not that I do. I don't assume anything with religion.

what my parents taught me is not the truth

I had to seek the truth for 25 years in all the major belief systems of the world

I found that Christ's example is perfect and if we follow it we are seeking first the Kingdom of God which is coming "on earth as it is in heaven" and will be one of peace and love

follow the example of Christ (1 Peter 2:21; John 13:15; 1 John 2:6) including all the things he taught his Apostles to write for our instruction (2 Timothy 3:16)

Christ warned that there would be many false christians, claiming to believe in him yet not doing the will of his Father. And that there would only be a few *true* Christians doing the will of his Almighty Father YHWH (see Matthew 7:13-23)

So what did Christ do that we must do in order to be *true* Christians?

1. Pray to and serve "the only true God" (see John 17:3) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (see Acts 3:13) whose name is YHWH
see also;
Matthew 22:37/Deuteronomy 6:5
Matthew 14:23
Mark 1:35
Mark 6:46
Mark 14:32
Luke 6:12
Matthew 6:9
John 20:17
John 17:1-5
John 5:19
John 14:28
Mark 10:18
Matthew 26:39
John 8:17-18
Mark 13:32
Matthew 20:23
Matthew 3:17

2. love everyone (see Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:31) and never harm or kill another human being
see also;
Matthew 5:44-48
Matthew 26:52
Luke 6:27
1 Peter 2:23
1 Peter 3:9
Romans 12:17

3. Preach YHWH's Kingdom which He has appointed His only-begotten Son Yhshua to rule over
see;
Matthew 24:14
Luke 4:43
Luke 10:1-3
Acts 5:42
Acts 8:4
Acts 20:20
1 Corinthians 9:16
Romans 10:15
2 Timothy 4:2-5
Matthew 4:23a
Matthew 9:35a
Luke 9:6a

4. be "no part of the world" of human kingdoms/governments/politics
see;
John 18:36
Daniel 2:44
Luke 4:5-8
James 4:4
John 15:19
John 17:14
John 18:36
Acts 5:29
1 John 2:15
Romans 12:2
John 14:30
2 Corinthians 4:4
Ephesians 2:2
1 John 5:19

naturally, no one would ever follow the above examples of Christ if they did not believe and put faith in the fact that he was sent by his Almighty Father YHWH as our only means of salvation. One must accept and believe and have faith that Yhshua was sent by YHWH as our savior.

agape!

Satan is an angel of light. He will give you just enough truth to deceive you. You are at a critical place in your life. Life and death. Not just the death of your body, but the death of your everlasting soul. You sound as if you are earnestly searching. I suggest you look very deeply into the matter before making such an eternally significant decision. I also suggest you read The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel or Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis. There is also a movie by Grant Jeffery called The Signature of God that I HIGHLY recommend. 1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. May the Holy Spirit guide you into all truth. God Bless!!!

When I was in collage, I took a number of philosophy courses. I kept hearing "the Bible says this...," "the Bible says that...." My parents raised me Catholic. Who was I to believe? I chose to find out for myself who was telling the truth -- I read the Bible for myself.

What I found was that NONE of these were in accord with the Bible -- not the atheists and various non-christian religions, who claimed the Bible was wrong; not the Catholics, who said they have the true faith; and not even Protestant Christians who claim to follow the Bible and corrected the errors of the Catholic Church. Not a one of them followed the teachings of the Bible.

I've read about archaeological finds that verify the Bible. I've read histories that verify both the events of the Bible and fulfilled prophecies of the Bible.

So, my answer is, I neither assumed the truth, nor believed my parents. I followed what the Bible said, "Prove all things, keep that which is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

I don't know what "Theistic Satanism" is; Paganism is not a religion; and, according to the Bible (and my own experience), there are many false Christian churches out there in the world; so, I don't know what you mean by your statement. I'm wondering if you know.

The only way to know the truth is to find it for yourself -- but ask God to guide you.

Truth only exists in living relationships; not in intellectual acquisitions, laws or religious understanding. Ultimate truth is the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Why are you torn between three religions? Religions are hardly more than stagnant pools of ideas, built on various collections of human experience. Take the best from them and move on. Truth is beyond in rivers of living water.

A Story
There was a young woman courted by several very serious suitors. They spent much time seeking her attention and took pains to be involved in her interests. As time went on, all but two fell away.

These two courted not only her but her family. They brought gifts of all sorts and shared their plans for the future; and how she would share in that future. At last she made a choice. The rejected suitor went away in great sadness.

After several days, still upset, he went back to speak with her. "You have made your choice and I respect that," he said. "I am here because I don't understand. Can you tell me one thing that he has, that I do not have?" She considered quietly for a minute and replied. "He has me; that is the difference." The End

This young woman is the truth of this story. The efforts to court her are religions. Her person and presence, in the end, is the only truth and all the difference. I hope you see.

You will find a few helpfull spiritual ideas in most religions. Most are just easier understandings on the same subject. They may also be experiences or insights that open us up to look at things in another light. However, none of these things are life and light and truth in themselves.

What is to be sought and experienced is not religion, ideas or even ritual, but the Lord Jesus Christ. His presence goes beyond religion, ideas and ritual.

Now God is in His word, the Bible, but with that, consider this one line of an old hymn: "Beyond the sacred page, I seek thee Lord. My spirit pants for thee, oh living word."

When you find a living relationship with the designer you were designed for, your spirit will know what truth is. If you're looking for truth in religions, you're looking for love in all the wrong places.

I believe that all religions are a quest for Truth. And since no one in search of Truth goes completely in the wrong direction, all religions contain and reveal Truth. Some probably get closer to the Actual Divine Truth than others, but still...Truth can never contradict Truth. So if you believe (as I do) that all Truth comes from God, then all religions ultimately lead to God in some way. (Though again, some probably get closer than others).

But as far as believing what your parents taught you... any religion in only useful to the extent that it makes Divine Truth accessible to someone. And I think that the things that our parents teach us are usually more accessible than something we have to pick up from books or foreign cultures, etc. That's why so many cling to their parents' beliefs without really reasoning things out for themselves. They have a shred of Truth; they just cling to it without risking for more.

Actually, my parents didn't teach me anything reagrding religion, though they took me to church & Sunday school. I was given a Bible, which I read ... and encouraged to memorize a Scripture weekly, which I did ... and from that, I was able to recognize some of the lies that that church was teaching. So, I'd turn my attention elsewherewhenever I noticed the subject wandered into unscriptural territory. As a young teen, I began asking questions about disturbing dogmas of many churches, and that was when I was introduced --by one of the persons I asked-- to people who make it their life's work to learn & teach what the Bible itself says, rather than man-made dogmas...

I believe that God himself has the Truth, & He shares it with those who earnestly seek the real answers...

My parents didn't teach me anything about religion. My mom let me get to an age where I could choose for myself how I worship. I guess, when it comes to parental teachings, I can't answer that question.

I do know that what I've learned, without the help of my parents, is the truth, though. I do plan to teach this to my children, if I am blessed with them. As they get older, they'll have to make the same choice that I did.

Isn't it interesting that the religious choice of the great majority of us is what we're told to believe in by our parents. And those who argue about the "truth" of there own religion use that very religion's sources as their proof. Well I guess if the bible/koran/book of mormon/bagavagita/dianetics tells us something it must be true -- right? Isn't it all kind of nonsense other than the part of our religions that encourages us to be more decent humans?

Anyway, to the original poster: I love your three choices. "Theistic Santanism" -- hmmmm, that sounds like alot of fun. Let me guess: lots of costume parties with Van Halen music blaring in the background.

I generally don't assume anything to be true. How can I be sure that the color blue is really blue? I can't see through anyone else's eyes. Maybe the color that I think is blue would look red to someone else. But they call it blue because that's what they've always called it.

But I've been a difficult child ever since the mirror incident in 5th grade science class....
