We encouraged Saddam Hussein to attack Iran, after Ronald Reagan brokered a deal between the US and the iranians who captured our embassy staff--the famous arms for hostages exchange.

Thus we sold weapons to both sides. Neither side did much invading, mostly they just lobbed US manufactured missiles at each other.

I consider it very likely that Iran will desire reparations for the war crimes committed by Iraq at US urging. I expect they would annex south eastern oil fields. Iraq won't be able to do anything about it. On the other hand, we may retaliate from one of our many new permanent military bases in the region.

Not "take over" as in invade, but Iran will be looking to have as much influence in Iraq as Syria had (may yet have?) in the Lebanon.
Especially with the Shia of the south.

And sections of the reforming Iraqi army and police could easily be of divided loyalty (at best) on this.
Of course, factionalism means the situation will be complex, and probably violent.

I don't believe Iran will try and take it over. I do see Iraq, however being crushed by internal strife with the likely influence of outsiders including Iran, Syria and the Al-Qaeada type groups. All of this may very well then spill over into the rest of the region.

Well thats like asking if mexicans would take over Texas. Historically those people did migrate between the two modern countries. Actually, the current borders dont serve any purpose but to structure soveriegn authority. It is why people throughout the middle east travel from one country to the next.

They won't move in with troops or anything like that because that would pull the US right back in there. They'll use political influence and terrorists (kidnappings, drive-by shootings, bombings, etc) to control the Iraqi government.

I don't think Iran has any interest in Iraq other than the fact that our military is sitting there. Iran has plenty of oil and honestly, do you really think Iran wants to plunge itself into the middle of civil war if and when we leave? I really don't think anyone would like to be in our position.

If they do it will all be staged by the Bush Administration or the Mossad. I like the President of Iran. I think he has a lot more common sense then Bush does.

Who cares? I don't think Iraq will ever be able to protect itself. Kuwait can take them over after the US leaves.

they don't have to with a shia led gov they will most likely become allies. most of the shia militias and their political wings were funded by Iran when Saddam ran the country so they feel indebted to them

No.

The Iraqi army is trained and equipped well enough for the ensuing civil war to last for years.
