if we react to a situation today, but our decisions and reactions are based on what has happened in the past. does this tend to suggest we are conditioned to react in a certain manner, what does this suggest about programming and free-will. do we exercise free-will if we simply re-act based on the past, what is the difference between us and robots who are programmed to react in a certain manner? where does spontaneity fit in?

All of us carry the past with us. Good or bad it is there. Some really bad things we can work on and heal enough to go on with our lives, but the memories are always going to be there. When something triggers an old memory the feels associated with it come back to us. This doesn't make us robots. It makes us human being with feeling. We can sometimes catch ourselves and not act on the feeling. To answer your question, the past always has an effect to some extent on the present. Even in good ways. We are conditioned by our experiences. And we learn from the past. Like the saying goes, those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Live and learn and grow and be better.
