CPS has accused us of harming our children but can't back it up. They're using my postpartum depression as a result. They also said that my OBGYM said that I wanted to hurt my older daughter (3). The documents I got from my doctor said that I had no thoughts of hurting my children. They also said that my husband can't parent because of mental illness. Is that the same as brain trama from a motorcycle accident? They said I had mental illness because of my depression. Is that even right of them to do? Please help I"m lost and I want these people to know what kind of hell they have put us through.

Hi. I answered your other question regarding CPS. You must get the documents from your OBGYN and make multiple copies of it. You should also consult with a psychiatrist for the purposes of this case with a lawyer. Postpartum depression is a very normal reaction to pregnancy and most, if not all, women get it. In this day and age, with all the media attention placed on mental health, you should not be persecuted for a mental malady. If CPS had their way, they would take every single infant away from their mothers until PPD ended. It is absolute bull. Unless they can prove that you harmed your child or confessed that you would harm your child, they have no right to take your children away from you b/c of postpartum. As far as your husband is concerned, even if he was mentally ill, the only thing they can do is make him have supervised visits, preferably with you or other family members. They cannot take away his visitation rights b/c of ANY handicap. This department sickens me. I wish they would understand that unless a child is in real danger, any child would much rather be with his/her own mom and dad no matter what, than to be in a foster home. Please fight for your rights. They cannot take your children from you b/c of postpartum depression. Another poster had a good idea (someone told me this too when I was dealing with CPS)....expose the case to every single news media you can. CPS needs to be put in their place once and for all.

I am so sorry this has happened to you. The best thing you can do is to get all your medical documentation together, a letter from your doctor, a letter from your husbands doctor, letters from friends and family. Get all these notarized. Keep a journal of every phone call you make to or get from CPS. Record the date, time, who you spoke to, how long you talked and what was said in the conversation. Also record the same information any time someone from CPS comes to your home. Take photos of your home. Take ALL of this with you when you go to talk to the judge. The more documentation you have showing your side of what is going on the better chance you have of getting your kids back. While I agree that they are trying to protect the children, sometimes you get a wacky case worker. Please try not to hold it against them. They are horribly overloaded with work. I hope this helps.

You have read in the newspapers of what can potentially happen to women with postpartum depression. These people are checking to see that your children (who can't really speak for themselves) are safe.

They are looking for parents to be willing to cooperate with the investigation and to work toward meeting the goals stipulated for your particular case. Request that notes be made in your case to correct the incorrect statements.

Ask if you need to have a lawyer or someone to confer with.

Consider having a relative come and help you for a while.

Getting treatment for your postpartum depression will be the best thing you can do for yourself and your family. I know it all feels so threatening, but it really is meant to be helpful.
