Is islam a violent cult or a peaceful religion?

I really want to know.. Certainly there are violent muslims and peaceful muslims. I already know that.

In other words, who more closely follows the meaning of Islam, the violent people or the peaceful people?

Peaceful! one of the literal meaning of "Islam" is "Peace" and it is so unbeleivably ignorant for people to think that it is a violent religion as a whole... Prophet mohammad (S.A.W.) was always considered to be an honest, sincere, faithful, decent man his entire life. Muslims are to follow his ways if they want to be the perfect Muslim and reach paradise. Our prohet (S.A.W) never raised his hand at anyone nor did he start any wars. It was people, who did not agree with Prohet Mohammad's teachings, that began to fight. PEOPLE start wars, not the religon. He once listed murder as the second of the major sins, and he even warned that on the day of judgement, "the first cases to be adjuducated between people on the Day of Judgement will be those of bloodshed." A Muslim individual who commits an act of terrorism will live with that guilt their entire life, now and in the afterlife, of violating the laws of Islam.
Muslims are even encouraged to be kind to animals, any living thing, and are awarded in doing so.
The fact is, Muslims shud follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness, and most of them have nothing to do with the violent events some have associated with Muslims.
There are millions! of Muslims who practice the true religion.
Please, don't beleive that Islam is a religion that preaches violence. NO religion does this, all religions have their own beliefs, and it is wrong to be against any religion if u have not studied it (not directed towards you, oc_man). Non-muslims who are curious about Islam in any way should educate themselves by doing research, and asking questions, and I would hope their answers will satisfy them in a good way.

If you call self defense violence then yes Islam is violent. Muslims are not allowed to attack or kill any human without being attacked. Muslims are not allowed to kill animals, destruct plants or properties without a reason. Listen, smart ones up there ^^, you can't argue about religion because every single person, and i cant stress this enough, everyone has a DIFFERENT OPINION about it. And also, you cannot generalize muslims or christians into one "evil category because, its not the religion, its the people. Well, we haven't been attacked since 9/11 (thank you Mr. Bush), and now all of a sudden this little motto is being spread about that says "Islam; the religion of peace". Its pretty obvious, since in the mosques both in the usa and abroad, they still teach death to Westerners they call infidels and they call us Satan worshippers.

It really depends on who the person is who follows. You could ask that to any religion here and it would depend on each individuals nature. Some are violent fanatics and some are peaceful lovers of God.

It depends on who you talk to. Muslims are gonna say they're peaceful. You ask anyone who had some one killed by them on 9-11 or over in the middle east, and they're gonna say their violent. I personally think there are good Muslims and evil Muslims. Their religion does not necessarily make them evil, we choose to be good or bad.

The peaceful Muslims that i know are the local business people, most people living outside Arab countries, the Bedouins and dead Muslims.
The violent ones are oftentimes found within the Islamic schools in Arab countries and the religious clerics and their religious police plus the moneyed ones who wants more than what they already have and very much alive Muslims.
