I'll be browsing with IE7, and after clicking a link, even within a reputable website, multiple tabs will start opening up, one after another, rapid-fire (IE6 did the same thing, opening new windows, rather than tabs). It won't stop until I use Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) to end task. Sometimes hundreds of them will open. I keep my anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall and Windows up to date and run scans regularly, but it continues to happen. I've searched the web, including Microsoft, for answers, but have found no help. Has anyone else experienced this? Why is it happening? What can I do about it?

You have smalware installed on your system. If you follow all the following steps it should get rid of your problem and prevent future problems. All programs listed are free.

---------------------------------------------------------
Update your antivirus and run a full scan

If you do not have virus protection install:
AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
or
AOL Active Virus Shield

---------------------------------------------------------
Install Windows Defender (full time spyware protection)
Perform a full scan.

---------------------------------------------------------
Install the following five programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all five. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection.
Install and run now.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)

CCleaner: Do not install toolbar and recycle bin options
Removes tracking cookies, unneeded files, history
In options.
Set to run when computer starts.
Place cookies you want to keep in save list
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.

In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.

Right click on "my computer"> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn of system restore

After the malware is removed turn on system restore.

In my case it is a glitch in the program. If I don't let the process of opening a window/tab finish before I click on another, then the program gets confused and seems caught in some type of loop opening tabs. It only happens when I click things too quickly. I have a mouse with a sticky roller. It doesn't always do what I intend. If your circumstances are different, then it might be another problem.

You have viruses and/or spyware/adware. Spybot and BitDefender should do the trick. Download the free versions and fully update. Then scan and fix. Problem solved. Afterward, you'll want to clean up with CrapCleaner. Just use the basic functions of these programs unless you are fully aware of their capabilities, as they have the possibility to do more harm than good. (If you don't know what you are doing.)

Remember: Always backup your registry before modifying any entries!!!

i've never heard of this. The only thing I can think of, and I know it sounds like you are on top of this, but that a virus or spyware or adware is trying to open new tabs.

This sounds like what happened to me a short time ago. The problem ended up being caused by a program I had downloaded...it started going berserk! I looked into "Event Viewer" and worked out what the problem was..... once I uninstalled and then re-installed the offending program, everything was ok. Might be worth a thought!

They're most likely a spyware that your anti-spyware doesn't catch. Get a popup blocker. You should get someone to look at your computer though, he's obviously under stress.

Sound like a spyware invading your system, scan your pc for viruses using AVG, and Lavasoft Ad-Aware for spwares and stuff, update them, that's absurd, opening new tabs w/o a reason?

Yes, I had the same problem. It was a virus of some sort and I couldn't get rid of it until I formatted and reinstalled windows on my hard drive.

I run the Yahoo popup blocker and this doesn't happen unless it is a porn site. Somehow they're able to get around it.
