the polite, and safe way for a cyclist to pass another bike, or jogger on a public path is to say, "on your left" as they approach. ( I do)
but i know ( from personal exp) what you mean about the rude lance wannabes out there. They are just trying to show off. .
and to put it bluntly they are snobs.
I've had othe experiences with that "elite" group. They seem to have amnesia. They don't remember what their own fitness level was when they started cycling . and if you don;t hop on a 2000 dollar bike and ride a 100 miles you aren't really worthy of calling yourself a cyclist ...according to them.
I know not ALL cyclist are that way. but a big portion of them ARE.

That's not always the case. I will announce that I'm passing, but I do get people that are angry ( I guess that they think I'm trying to rub it in, but I just don't want them darting into my path). Some people think it's rude and I will not announce if I'm passing somone who is keeping a strait line because it's unnessacary to announce to a single person if you're overtaking them by going on the otherside of the trail. It's not that they aren't acknowledgeing your presence, they're probably trying to keep up a certian cadence (pace), HR, or are trying to do intervals and focusing on that. It dosen't make them rude because they don't wave to you or announce themselves if you're not in the way.
If you're using the trai, then you should be aware that you're not supposed to be darting around from side to side. Treat it like a road way and always be aware of what is going on and you'll be safe. If they're going to overtake you on the same side of the trail, then it is rude for them to not announce themselves since they are just inches from your handlebars. Infact they shouldn't be doing that on a trail, it's not a race.
Not all cyclists are jerks, so please don't lump everyone on a road bike into the "Armstrong wanna-be" category. Some of us have been riding long before the whole livestrong thing came into the mainstream.

Yea, not only do they lack the social skills on the trail but are seemingly ignorant (or think that stop signs and turn lanes and red lites don't apply to them either. I was at a 4 way intersection on my motorcycle with the right turn signal on and it was my turn to go when this D A passes me on the right running the stop sign and says "sorry" . I am on a 690 lb Harley and me weighing225lb + and he darn near wrecks me. I caught a glimpse of him in my r/s rear view mirror and kept from colliding with him. My motorcycle was fairly new and I pd $18,000+ for it. Course the wreck would have resulted in me running over top of him and possibly laying the Motorcycle down on top of him with the red hot exhaust pinning him underneath. Guess if I had ,it would have "broke him from running stop signs" on the right side of bikers and I could have sued him also for my damages and waited for the EMT's and fire dept to come and lift the motorcycle off him while he was "sizzling like a hamburger on the grill" underneath it. The other day ,at a red light I was again turning right when one passed me on the left and turned right in front of me as the light turned green. I was driving my 1 ton truck with about 40 concrete blocks in the bed and out of instinct I ,again, hit the brakes and let another "fool' live for one more day. I could go on & on but, well, I guess "GOD REALLY DOES WATCH OUT FOR LITTLE KIDS AND FOOLS"

I'll agree with you there. Maybe they think you can 'hear' them coming. I live near a bike/hike path and I hate walking on it on the weekends with all the 'weekend warriors' on their bikes. I've almost been run down several times.
