Anybody have a dog survive? I'm so afraid for her!

2007-04-27 17:38:58 · 11 answers · asked by hex_alot 1 in Pets Dogs

She is at a vet specialty center. i normally take her their for her cancer treatments. I suspected something wrong this time when she did'nt recover from her recent treatment. It's Natural Balance 12oz cans of Liver, Beef & Chicken dog food I've been feeding her. I switched to this brand when I found out the previous brand I was feeding her was part of the recall. I was curious after the vet told me her condition. I went to Petco's web site and I found out the recalled food now included the food I switched her to as of 04/26/2007. I can't forgive myself if she dies. She is 16 years old.

There is a possibility that she will survive if you got her to the vet early enough, but there is also a chance that she may not make it because kidney failure is very serious. Make sure you save ALL veterinary documentation and records about this. Since the vet already said it's kidney failure, make sure that statement is on record. Also, try to find out from him if it could be the recalled food (first, look it up to see if the food you gave her was even recalled). Then, call the food company, tell them about your documentation, and tell them you want a FULL and entire reimbursement of vet costs. If they keep giving you a hard time, I would pursue legal action in small claims court. Most liekly, they will just give you the money (settle) for the vet costs because it would be impractical for them to go to small claims court over only a few thousand dollars. You do not need a lawyer for small claims court, so everyone can afford legal action.
Aside from that, just keep up with the vet's advice, and don't be afraid to get a second opinion.
I hope she gets better and makes it through this. Good Luck

I am so sorry this has happened to your dog. I hope she will survive this. What a nightmare. I do know of dogs that have gotten sick from bad food and they did pull through. If your dog is 16 in dog years, it will be tougher for her, but that is not to say she won't make it. I am sure we are all pulling for you and for your dog, here.
A site where you can get updates on foods that are adding to the recall list is available here:
http://www.itchmo.com
You can sign up to get e-mails when anything is added, the recalls show up here faster than the FDA posts them. Or you can just check the site daily.

Yeah, WELCOME TO MY SAD LITTLE WORLD!

My cat Abby is also dying because I fed her THOSE NAZI'S FOOD! (I hope they all go bankrupt and then get hit by a bus! Sorry, I am PISSED!)

First, get a second opinion. I know you like your Vet, but a second opinion is always a smart idea in a life and death situation.

There is very little we can do for our Pet's. An animal can get a kidney transplant but it is expensive and another animal will have to be killed for it. Not really fair.

The most IMPORTANT thing is HYDRATION and PROTEIN. A vet can prescribe a special food called K/D. It can only be bought with a medical card given to you by your Vet. Pet Smart is just one of the places you can get this food. This food is mostly protein. Most animals may not like it because it has a "pasty" taste. Don't worry, you can mix it with another can of wet food or Dry kibble.

Next, you need to realize that your Dog is going to have to PEE ALL THE TIME! My Cat can pee at an Olympic Level! I have to change her litter box two times a day. I have my cat Abby in a Large Dog cage now, she has become a floor wetter. She can't always make it to the box in time. For a dog, A doggy door would be a good idea. Or A indoor Dog Litter box can help. Yes they make them for dogs.

Your dog is going to drink more and MORE! A bowl of water in each room can help. My cat prefers Ice cold water, she sometimes runs a fever and it helps cool her down.

You will also have to schedule regular visits to your vet for blood tests.Your dog's blood gases will have to be monitored. Work out a schedule with your Doctor. I take my cat Once ever Two months. Unless she becomes sick, then we go ASAP!

You may notice your dog become a bit "tipsy". Animals with this condition become Dizzy. You dog may have trouble walking up stairs or climbing on your bed/couch. Do not be alarmed if your dog falls down for no reason. Just make sure your dog is okay and help him/her to it's location.

I am very sorry to say there is nothing we can do but make them comfortable. (AND WISH A PAINFUL DEATH TO THE PET FOOD COMPANIES!). You can prolong your Dog's life with proper care. Animals can live many years with Kidney Failure. Your new enemy is going to be the world SEPTIC! That is an infection that goes terribly bad. if your dog stops eating and drinking, Run to the VET ASAP.

I am in the same boat... and it is a leaky little S.S Minow! Just be there for your dog, be understanding and kind.

Good Luck! I know how hard this time is going to be for you.

I am so sorry to hear that! I know that you must be scared to death. I have the Menu Foods recalled list bookmarked. Here is the link http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html

Check the website. If the food is on the list, get her to the vet ASAP! If not, she might just be experiencing a little bug. Dogs get sick just like people do. Hope this helps.

All the bad food has been pulled out of the stores. Did you feed her something you had in the house? You are smarter than that, I would think. You should have thrown it out or returned it to the store for your money back.

If the vet said her kidneys are failing, what is he doing? Did he keep her or give you meds for her? He didn't just send you home and nothing was done..........

You sure you are not kidding with us? It isn't funny if you have animals to kid about this recall.

Click here for the Pet Food Recall list and see if the food your pet ate is listed:
http://www.libertydogtraining.com/recalls.html

You will also find a link to the FDA complaint coordinators. Click there and find the one for your state, and make them aware of the problem, if it indeed is pet food related.

Did the vet tell you if he can do anything to help her?

Take her to a pet hospital and not just the vet. If you are in a large city, is there an ASPCA or SPCA hospital in your city? If there is, take her to the hospital.

Good Luck, I wish her a good recovery.

Are you frieking serious?? Your dog was going to get CANCER treatments and you noticed it was sick...and it is 16 years old. OLD dogs with CANCER die, I am sure the pet food will only be knocking a few misserable weeks of its life. Do your dog a favor and put it out of it's missery.
