Is it legal to have a pet duck or goose in the US/Florida? More specifically in Lake County Florida.

Florida has some very strict laws about waterfowl. They have some problems with people releasing domestics and some wild breeds are getting cross bred into extinction. I woudl check your zoning to see if you can have pet ducks. If your keeping then enclosed you probably wont have a problem. Basically as long as your ducks arent wild you can own them as long as your zoned for poultry.

Lots of people have ducks and geese; every city and county has its own requirements, so that is where you should direct your question.
However, in many cases when it is technically illegal to have a farm animal like a duck or chicken, you can get away with keeping them in your back yard if they don't bother anybody. I've had ducks in the city, I never even thought about it before getting them. They are not loud, and domestic ducks don't fly. I knew a woman with a goose in the city too, but I don't know whether it was legal or whether she had a permit.

As long as it isn't an endangered species. Or some species they don't want to get loose and propigate in the wild, Florida has lots of wet wild lands and it could be that Ducks or Geese would draw Crocodiles into neighborhoods! Best to check with the wildlife Dept. Hope that helps!

As long as you live outside the city limits (and not in a deed restricted community that has restraints on livestock), you shouldn't have a problem. Right across the county line in west Volusia County we have several people with ducks and geese.

Try checking on www.municode.com - that has all the bylaws across the states online. You can also check with the local council, and check that any homeowners association doesn't have bylaws against it.

Even if it is illegal, there are plenty of people who keep poultry illegally. So long as your neighbours don't complain, then no one need ever know ;)

Yep, check your local feed store, vet clinic, or farm type store. You can also purchase one via on line or catalog. I have had good luck with the Murray McMurray hatchery out of Iowa. Just engine search some hatcheries and request a free catalog. Good luck : )
