If you know that you are bipolar why won't you seek help? When you are having your mood swings you may hurt your kids and not realize it. My daughter doesn't know what she is doing when she is depressed. She cuts herself and does not realize that this hurts those that love her. fortunately she has been put on meds that have really helped. I would say that if you do not care about your kids enough to get help then find someone that will take them and that will still allow you to have some contact with them either in person or by letters but it depends on how old your kids are. Kids may think that they are the reason for your problems and need to be assured that they are Not the reason, if this isn't made clear it can mess them up too.

Why would you not seek help? What is your fear?
------------ --------------- -------------- -------------
You are speaking of some serious things here, with lifelong consequences. Making such choices, you would be well advised to seek input and counsel from both mental health and from legal counsel. Human / Social Services and your local Mental Health Clinic would be willing to work with you and your children to help you determine what is best for both you and your children. They may also provide the care you need to be stable and stay parenting your own children.

Some people who are depressed and suffer strong mood swings can be in a state of mind that they cannot properly care for their children. A child needs a stable parent - every day. You would not wish your child to be emotionally or physically hurt in times when you are not in control of your mouth or body or mood.

Sometimes a child is damaged growing up in that type of environment - they are totally dependant on you to show them the right way to live and learn and love. They cannot understand when their parent is suddenly different.

Some people who are not treated for mental illnesses should not be parenting. Much the same as someone who has been drinking should not be driving with children in the car.
The potential of doing serious damage is just too great.

I hope you consider seeking help and keeping current with your therapy and medications.

No- there is no reason why you should give up your kids. Having a mental illness does not go hand in hand with being a bad mum. But for yourself I think you should seek help. Mental health services won't take your children away just because you contacted them. You need to invest in your future, and the future of your kids.

it depends on how done with it you are and how far you take it with your children, maybe family could help out until you get oyu own head in order but keeping them in a unstable family unit in which they dont know whether or not today is going to mommy's "good" day is really gona mess them up. also not getting help for your own sanity isnt going to help anything....get help please
