Looking for ideas on what to give my 2 cockatiels for a homemade treat. They love anything crunchy.Cannot get them to eat any veggies except lettuce and they won't eat fruit at all.Right now they are on a diet of Zupreem and slivered almonds for protein, but would like to give them more of a variety.Any suggestions? Thanks.

You can get some Jiffy Cornbread Mix, mix it up like the box says, then add some veggies. Then pour it into a casserole dish and bake. Cut into squares. Serve one square whenever you want. Freeze the rest. I hope this helps.

that's great that you have them on zupreem! hmm for crunchy, you can look for an all natural freeze dried veggie,at a larger grocery store chain, bulk area. and even try a dehydrated fruit from a company like goldenfeist out of PA.(best parrot food I've found) as far as "homemade", you might want to hit up the "food" answers board and ask about drying foods in the home.

Heres is a good cockatiel fruit mix mine love!
Heres what you do:
Chop up 1 frozen strawberries [not stem]
Chop 2 Melon pieces the size of a 1/2 dollar coin
Chop 2-3 mandrien oranges slices [before you slice them they should be the size of a button
Chop a pineapple cube
Chop up 5-6 Grapes [seedless]
Now add a 2 spoonfuls of the mandrien orange juice
and one spoonful of pineapple juice

Put it all in one container and freeze for 15min [or until its cold [NOT SLUSH!!!]

May make them go to the bathroom more though

ENJOY!

I have two cockatiels and what i do a lot of the time is pretend I`m eating something like a veggie or popcorn and they have to see what i`m doing.

One way I got my cockateils to eat fruits and veggies is to start them off with broccoli florets because they kind of look like seeds and strawberries have seeds on the outside so sometimes they will be attracted too them. Also I like to remove the birds from their cage and away so that they can not see their cage, may be the kitchen table. You could cut various fruits and veggies up and start munching yourself and they will start to explore and may be become interested and start eating. I would actually prepare my fresh veggies around my birds and they would start eating. I like to actually remove my bird from their cage area so that they cannot see their cage, kind of taking the out of their comfort zone, it really helps me to train my birds in any way. Also my birds love cantaloupe seeds. Have fun:)

I have a pair of tiels, Nemo and Pheebe, and if they see me eat something they go crazy!!!! Try to eat a fruit in front of them, and then offer them some, but as you probably know not from your mouth, cut a piece separately. They won't eat strawberries (and a lot of fruits and veggies) if I put it in their cage, but If I eat it they have some too. Good luck!
