I want to do some remodeling in my home and want to do most of the work myself. Trim work, build walls, etc...just general wood working but mainly how to use a saw! (Yes, I am a girl!) I living in Virginia and have searched VoTech, Trade Schools and even Home Depot and Lowe's for "how to" clinics, but I can't find any place that offers classes like this. I am too old to go back to high school and attend WOODSHOP, but that is exactly what I need. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There are stores around the country called WOODCRAFT centers and I think they may be based in Virginia that offer classes, or you can go to PBS and get the NEW YANKEE workshop videos from NORM ABRAMS he has how to videos. You can also go online to woodworkers.com and they have videos you can buy on the subjects also. Good luck

Book learning, watching building shows on TV or here on the web are great. (Years ago I actually went to a VocTech to learn what you are wanting to learn and there were women in their 50's in the class as well. We also learned welding, plumbing, electrical........it was a ball!!) Our local VocTech has a furniture building course that would be helpful for you.

Anyway, check out Habitat for Humanity projects. They are always looking for help. You may start off painting, but hang around, watch ask questions, etc.

Go back to Lowe's during slack periods and get the guys and gals to show saw safety, lining up the cuts, how to cut curves or angles, etc. They won't turn on the equipment, but can explain.

Apprentice with a journeyman in the craft and soak it in. You could do it on weekends and part time. Check out the people and get some references for their character. Work for free lots of jobs have left over materials you could glean if they permit. Working is the best teacher.

hey: my sister can do it, so can you .lol. try the library. get a bunch of books and see which one explains stuff the best. what kind of saw are you talking about? sounds like you would be best off with a power miter. get one with a laser and u will do just fine. remeber to learn how to grunt, wear a tool belt, and properly show butt crack!
