Today on my way home from a school dance I got pulled over by a cop because I was speeding. I am 17, and I got so scared that i burst into tears because I was really really speeding. THe cop said i was going 56 in a 25 mph road, and said that was enough to take my license away. But he was nice and seemed to feel bad for me because I was crying my eyes out and it was my first offense, and said that he was going to cut me a major break. He said I would not even get any points and he wasnt giving me a "speeding" ticket. WHen I got home i looked at the ticket he gave me & he had marked my charge as maximum speed limits, and he also wrote next to other : "Failure to obey traffic control device." He had said this means that I didnt pay attention to speed limits signs, but he also has written exactly how much I was speeding by. What does he mean, he is cutting me a break? how would he do that? Could he have lied to me to calm me down? if anyone knows what the cop meant please help

He could not have lied, he cut you a break by not cuffing you and arresting you. You really do deserve to have spent the night in jail and waited for your parents to come get you, and you shouldn't have a liscense, you obviously are not mature enough to be behind the wheel of a vehicle.

the fact alone that you were doing 25mph over the limit, in most states is an automatic license suspension of 1 year. then add in fact it was a 25mph zone, meaning city, residential or school, the fine should be doubled the normal rate. And yes, since you were over 25mph over the posted limited, he could of easily impounded your car as well.

He could of made your life a living hell. Taking the car, your license, giving you a fine of at least $200, not being able to drive for a year, most likely having to retake your entire drivers test due to fact you are under 18, plus your insurance would of instantly been a SR-22 type, which is over double the normal rate.

So yes, he cut you a MAJOR break by giving you a ticket only with a fine only. I wouldn't say a thing and just pay the ticket as soon as possible.

Quick life lesson:
90% of all cops are lying assholes.

Now that’s established, lets get to the heart of the matter:

A) The pig can’t take your license away, that needs to be done by a judge, and even then, it’s unlikely that it would be revoked for a first time speeding offense.
B) A “traffic control device” is a stop sign or such, if he wanted to get you for speeding, he most likely would of put something like “failure to obey posted signage”, however, your state might be different.

What it sounds like to me is that he wanted to get you to stop crying, but still wanted to meet his quota, so made up this story about being nice, then slapped you with a ticket anyway.

If you don't have to appear in court you have a break. Also you could be required to bring a parent with you. Pay the fine and let it go away.

If speeding is not the offense on the citation the fine will be much less. He noted the speed for future reference in case you turn out to be a reckless driver or you accumulate offenses. It will cost you more in the long run to be unsafe.

he cut you a break by how he worded the ticket.
first of all, they usually will give you 5 mph over the posted speed.
2nd in Utah it is about $20 for every mph you are over in a residential area.
3rd you would have received enough points to have your license taken for 6 months.

So by saying you didn't see the sign, instead of saying you were speeding he cut you a break, because you didn't have to pay a $520 fine for doing 26 mph over, and you didn't get your license taken for 6 months.

He cut you a break by not giving you a ticket. You should be very thankful for this. Besides points on your license, you would have had higher insurance costs and fines to pay.

Did we learn something from this experience? I hope so.

Failure to obey is a DIFFERENT charge from speeding .
Maybe you skipped reading class and drivers ed ?

Time to go back to a bicycle until you mature some .
You are too reckless and had you hit someone ,
Their injury would reallyyyy have trashed your record.

also, failure to obey a highway sign is not a moving violation and since that was the offense with which he charged you, you will not acquire points, and your insurance should not increase not by as much anyway

Depending on your state, he could have revoked your license and impounded the vehicle. They almost never exercise this unless you're being a jerk to the cop.
