I have a golden lab mix about 2.5 years old. He let me look at this black scab on his chest and it's about 3/8" diameter. At first I thought it was a dead tick and when I felt it I got blood on my hand. It has scabbed over again and the dog does NOT want me to look at it again. I'm worried about cancer. Any ideas out there? I can't afford a vet right now, but will take him if i have to.

i work at an animal hospital and without actually see it is hard to answer but if it: 1. Is a scabbed abscess/cut then I would clean the area with hydrogen peroxide and water twice a day and apply neosporin if the area is red or swollen after 5 days take him to a vet and get him on some antibiotics. 2. If it is a growth that is bleed, it needs to be seen at a vet's office and antibiotics are needed and possible removal.

Chances are you will need to go to the vet.If it is lumpish it could be a mole or cyst.Or it could be that he had a tick and the head is still in there. But beings that he won't let you look at it again is a good indication that it is painful.Try to shave off the hair surrounding the area. This will give you a better view with out him knowing and also let air get to the area and keep hair out of the wound. But go to the vet with your next pay check and let them see it.

Don't start whining now about how you can't afford a vet, yet can afford to have a dog! A dog is a living being and it is his RIGHT by law to have medical care when he needs it, or you can be cited by Animal Control for abuse.

There! Now you have no more excuses. Your dog will get the care he needs and deserves, the vet will get paid, and you can make monthly payments to a NO-INTEREST loan.

And don't ever get another animal again until you are responsible enough to properly care for it.

Sounds like an skin ulcer. My cocker had a few of them. your best bet is to take him to the vet. Don't rely on the advice of a yahoolian when it concerns a close member in the family

If you can't afford a vet, you are still responsible for keeping your dog out of pain. If you can't clear up what the problem and how to fix it yourself in a day or two, start calling around for animal control or SPCA, or ask the police who you can bring the dog to. They will determine the problem, and fix it or put the dog out of pain. They may want to put it up for adoption. Don't have a dog if you can't afford to keep it from pain. Do right. Good luck.

Take him. It could be a number of things, none of them good.
