He may have packed down the wax in his ear.
You could tell, because when he pulls on his ear to hold it open, he would be able to hear better.
If this is the case, you can buy wax removing ear drops for $10 or less.

If he damaged his ear drum, though, he needs a doctor.

Hi, hoping your son may be treated now and feeling a whole lot better. But for anyone interested, I used a Q tip in my ear and lost my hearing temporarily. The cotton on the end had come loose and stayed inside my ear. I had the ear specialist remove it but it also became infected and the pain was really bad but as the antibiotics kicked in, the pain slowly dissapeared. My son has grommets in his ears and when wax builds up around these he suffers a lot of pain. My doctor has given him antibiotics but also recommended using a few drops of warm olive oil (pure) into the ear using an eye dropper. I have been doing this twice a day in the week following the doctors advice and this has helped to soften the wax so the grommets can do their job properly. Anyway, just thought I would share this with you all.

He went too far, maybe punctured the eardrum, stapes, or the other two small bones that lay within the ear. In that case, it's a major medical problem, and should see a doctor immediatly. Obvious pain would have been present while he was doing it.
Also it's a possibility he shoved ear wax further into the ear canal, making everything less audible. However, unless he has an abnormal accumulation of ear wax, that shouldn't make him completly deaf in one ear.
See a doctor!

It could be that he pushed earwax farther into the ear canal and this causes the decreased hearing loss. Or he punctured the eardrum. In this case I would place a call to the pediatrician. Usually, there is not much they can do, but I'm not a doctor so you would want to treat this with precaution. I would also get a cotton ball and plug it into the ear to keep cold and air out.
Symptoms of a punctured eardrum are earache or pain, loss of hearing, drainage, a buzzing noise. The eardrum usually heals by itself within 2 months.

He may have punctured his ear-drum. Or he more than likely compacted his ear-wax further inward. A safe and effective treatment is mineral oil to help release and expel the ear-wax now and in the future. For both children and adults.

As for now try an ear wax removal oil and a warm heating pad for him to lay on (the left side of his ear) for about 15 - 20 minutes. The heating pad will help soften and "liquefy" the ear-wax and drain out of the ear.

I would take him to the doctor and have his ears checked and a hearing screen done. If i were you thats what I would do just in case of there actually being a problem. You wouldn't want to risk something happening to his hearing because you weren't sure.

He probably just jammed the crud in to far and it plugged up. Go to the doctor and have his ears cleaned.

They tell you not to use q-tips but I use them as soon as I get out of the shower and that seems to help.

Take your son to the ER to have his ear checked. It's possible he damaged the eardrum, or that he pushed wax in so far that it can't come out and is impeding the movment of the eardrum. You should not wait, so that infection does not have time to set in and do more damage.

If he experienced no pain...I dont think he punctured his eardrum
sounds like he compacted the wax further into the ear cannel
take him your your Md to get a professional exam, opinion, and possible ear irrigation
