I have owned many dogs over the years. I have had dogs from the humane society and dogs from breeders. I also have dogs from a litter I bred myself.

I have two dachshunds, both purebreds. I watched the website for our local animal control (like the dog pound??) until I saw two listed, then ran down to see them. I came home with a beautiful 11 month old owner surrender mini doxie, a little female chocolate. I got her Nov 2004. Then, in Feb 2005, I was driving back from an appointment, and decided to stop in at our local Humane Society, which is a no kill shelter (which, unfortunately, not all are) just to check out what they had. I left there with a 7 month old female Piebald purebred female, also an owner surrender. They were moving and couldn't (wouldn't) take her. Her brother had already been adopted. She is considered a "tweenie" at just under 14 pounds. Both are true sweethearts.

I highly recommend checking with your local shelters, rescues, and Humane societies for dogs, cats, and yes, birds, bunnies and other animals. There are always purebreds available as well as the Heinz 57s. And instead of paying thru the nose for the "new designer breeds" (what moron thought this up??) go save a life of those accidently designed breeds.

You might not be able to buy love, but you sure can adopt it.

Well,I decided I wanted to give a good home to a dog that had been mistreated. I wanted a female, young, but not a little puppy, and a large dog, but not huge. I opened the paper and there was advertised an 8 month old German Shepherd mix in need of TLC, she had been a hunting dog, but she was not good at it, so the ex owners kicked her around some and threw her over the fence into a ditch. She was picked up by a truck driver who knew them and brought to the city, where he gave her to a lady friend to find a new home for..... and she has been with me for about 4 years now.

There are so many breeders in the world, and if you want, that is where you can get one from, but when you go to get your puppy from the breeder, just remember that nearly a million dogs and cats are put to sleep dialy in the United States. Also, for every one puppy someone buys from a breeder, that can cost the life of at least two homeless animals. If you adopt one from the SPCA, humane society or your local shelter, it opens a spot for another homeless animal.

ANKC registered breeder. (Australian National Kennel Council)

EDIT: FOR JOE

How can you call me Selfish, you don't know me or what I do. I'm a registered breeder, I rescue Golden Retrievers that are dumped at the animals shelters that are from some result of backyard breeders. The only selfish people around here are the ones that are irresponsible and let their poor xbreed or unregistered pure bred pet get pregnant by the dog up the road, these are the ones you are adopting from the pound. Most responsible breeders help out with their Breed Club and rescue dumped unwanted dogs/puppies as they LOVE the breed they have, giving Hundreds of dollars to help that so they are rehabilitated and not put to sleep.

I got one of mine from a friend of a friend. And I got the other one at a festival in the nearby town from someone that was walking around trying to give puppies away. They are both mixed breeds. I kind of feel like I rescued them from the doggie pound.

Why did I get 2 thumbs down for my answer? Both of my dogs would have been put in the pound and probably euthanized if I hadn't have taken them. They are really great pets and very healthy. I also have had both of them fixed so they can't breed and bring more puppies in this world that no one wants.

The Pound!! If anyone on this page say they got a dog from a breeder or pet storeshame on them!!

There are so many dogs that need to be adopted from shelters all over the world, but people who buy dogs from breeders and dog stores, want puppies, which make them very selfish!!! There are dogs being put to sleep in shelters everyday, but your selfish readers who wrote they got them from breeders or puppy stores are selfish selfish selfish!!!!

I adopted my puppy from a dauchsand rescue place. I don't remember the name exactly. I find that adoption is the best way to get a dog. They need homes really bad. They need to know what it is like to have someone out there that actually loves them and treats them well.

Shadow- From my niece. She was an abused stray that was dropped off on my nieces' porch. My niece had a newborn baby and three dogs already, so she asked us if we wanted Shadow.
Dio and Benson- Our local humane society.
