If you go by air, you will need a passport to board a plane for an international flight (which would include to Canada), and to return back to the U.S.

If you went by land or sea, then until Jan 2008, you can get by with an official photo I.D. and proof of citizenship (birth certificate), both entering Canada AND returning to the U.S.

Alternative transportation to flying would be Train. The Pacific Surfliner from San Diego to Los Angelos and the Coast Starlight from Los Angelos to Vancouver, B.C. If you wanted to go further east, you could then take Via Rail or Greyhound.

The one-way cost of Amtrak from San Diego to Vancouver, B.C. is $100 if you book 1-2 weeks or so in advance ... the closer to departure day, the rates go up, though not significantly.

You need a passport if you fly in. You *do not* need a passport if you come in by land or sea, at least not until January of 2008. After that, you will need a passport to get into or out of Canada.

It depends where you're going in Canada, too. Cheapest way to go is probably Greyhound, although long. Train travel may be comparably priced. If they're close in price, go for the train. If you're just going to Vancouver, a straight line up from San Diego, then it's a straightforward trip on the bus or train. If you're going further out in Canada or to different cities, you may have to take a domestic flight in Canada, or a bus.

Plane is your best bet... And yes a passport.. You will have no problems getting in Canada.. You will have a harder time Entering back into the US without a passport... Same for Canada... They ask such stupid questions...

We went threw this last summer before the Passport thing kicked off.. Always harder to enter your own country then leaving it.

It really depends where in Canada you want to go. Your best bet is probably British Columbia, somwhere on the coast.

If you drove the I-15 straight up you'd be in my neck of the woods in Alberta.

So really it's what do you like better? High Plains with rolling rills and prairie witht he Rocky Mountains and foothills.... OR Coastal Mountains resembling what you're used to but in a more Northern climate with much larger trees and wildlife.

Flying within your own country is cheaper then flying international. Try to find a U.S. airport closest to your Canadian destination. Rent a car and drive the rest of the way.
