I disagree with it , the best candidate for the job should get the job, not based on their race or gender

I felt the same way about affirmative action as alot of people do before I really started doing some research.

In theory, in its most pure form it is a very good idea. To offset generations of poor education, and lack of being able to earn social capital *education, job experience, etc* it can be a very good idea. It helps to level the playing field in many ways that give minorities a more fair shake at things.

And for any of the Caucasian ladies out there who don't think that it helps them, that it is only for minorities, WOMEN are minorities too. And many many times Affirmative Action benefits women.

I don't think it is right to hire someone just to fill a quota, and if someone is more deserving and they happen to be white they should get the job most definitely over someone else.

This law is more meant to give some extra help to an African American candidate or some other minority candidate when they are JUST as qualified, but aren't considered due to race.

Another good idea from our Government to keep the blacks from crying. Do away with it and listen to the crying. I went to a Veterans Hospital and was refused treatment for cancer. An Affirmative Action employee said my cancer wasn't serious. I talked to 18 people about my problem and only one was white. It violates the Constitution along with my equal rights and freedom of speech.

Affirmative action is a dinosaur who is so outdated that it makes no sense for any one and should be done away with. The person who is most qualified for jobs should be the one who receives the benefits, all should be encouraged to work for what you receive and not have it given to you.

Affirmative Action is liberal, politically correct favoritism. I was brought up to believe everyone should be treated equally?

Unfortunately, racism is pervasive in this country so without affirmative action, quotas and programs like affirmative action, people who have been forced into inferior schools due to their economic situation don't get the quality education that other (white) people get. Thus, many people would never get a fair chance in this country were it not for special programs. You can argue all day long that people should be hired based on their credentials but if you never have a chance to attend superior schools, you'll never get a fair shake in this racist country. I attended mostly Black schools growing up and thus had an inferior education. Were it not for affirmative action, the civil rights and Black power movement, I would have never gotten the quality education I received. I got to attend Rutgers U. during a time when there were few blacks there. Someone woke up and realized that colored kids needed a chance to experience the "other" side, so doors were opened.

Scenario:
A wealthy caucasian goes to the best College money can buy. Gets good grades.

Middle class Hispanic (Indian, Asian etc.) goes to community collage and gets straight A's.

I am a wealthy caucasian CEO of a huge corporation.

Who do you think I'm going to hire??

Answer:
The one that went to the 'best' college because it is "assumed" they have the better education.

Why should the Hispanic (Indian, Asian etc.) lose out on a good job because they couldn't afford the 'best' college??

Affirmative action: YES - everyone has the right to an education.

the RACE factor needs to be eliminated for sure, it totally contradicts the true meaining of equal rights, only merits, and specific qualificatications should be considered for jobs and other endeavors

For it, as long as it doesn't lead to hiring of unqualified applicants because of their race. Affirmative action should be about helping disadvantaged people to compete with average people, not about giving minorities jobs despite the availability of better qualified non-minority applicants.

Judging people by skin color is racism, whether it's a good judgement or bad judgement doesn't matter. It's still based on skin color. You can't have it both ways.
