Marine diesel is usually not cheaper than gas, but diesel engines usually get better performance and better mileage- They have far better low end torque and diesel fuel has a higher energy content per gallon the gas. The real reason however that serious boats use diesel is that gasoline explodes and gasoline vapors are heavier than air and tend to collect in the bilge... Forget to run the bilge blower, or have a minor fuel leak? Turn the key and kaboom! You get blown up. I wouldn't have a gas engine in anything larger than a 20 foot open runabout and would certainly avoid gas in any vessel with a closed deck.

Diesel engines are generally considerably more effiecient than gas engines. The bad side to diesel is the initial cost. Just for an example... a 1 ton truck with a gas engine might be $3000-6000 less than a diesel version. I would always opt for a diesel over gas as long as I could justify the cost difference. In my area of Texas diesel is about $0.20 higher per gallon than gas.... this will vary though depending on your location.

Diesel has more potential energy than gasoline. Diesel engines would be much better for a boat since diesel engines do not require a spark to ignite the fuel. Diesel engines rely on compression to achieve fuel combustion.

Did you know you asked this in the beauty section?
Diesel can be cheaper - it depends on what the economy is like where you live. In No Cal right now, it's about .30 /gal cheaper than gas

Diesel fuel is generally less expensive than gasoline for any application. Diesel engines are more efficient and if they are burning biodiesel, are MUCH cleaner burning engines.
