For a large sliver near a vein or a nerve, do not fool around. Go to an emergency room and have a doctor remove it. It will just take a second - you might have to wait a while and fill out some forms, but it sure beats having a paralized hand for the rest of your life.

how do you know its on the vein? just wondering. It is probably fine clean the site with some hydrogen peroxide or betadine if you have it then just use some clean tweezers to pull it out. Chances are even if it is on the vein it will be fine if it bleeds persistantley just remember to apply pressure. If you are still in doubt go to urgent care or your physician..not an ER problem
