-OK, this should answer your question, looks long, but goes quickly. This is something I wrote before, I give it to people to read alot and get ALOT of best answers (Im not saying that to make you give it to me, Im just letting you know how good it is so you read it!) and has alot of info, It would just tell you everything I want you to know but more-

Dobermans are the best! there are not enough words for me to discribe how good a doberman is. Im always saying the same thing over and over agian to people, but a Doberman is the MOST AFFECTIONATE DOG EVER. I have worked in the circus since I was a baby and so did my family for 5 generations, and I have volunteerd at animal shelters and no dog can add up to a dobie. I have lived with them allll my life. And my dad trains them, and he taught me.
Now i currently have one, bc my dad lives in spain when he came to visit, he took me to a shelter and we adopted the one i have now, Hammer.
But any-whoo.. A doberman is not dangerous unless you abuse it, or treat it wrong for example, hitting him, ignoring, screaming at them abusivly, purposuly abusng him, and ect ect. As with any dog, they would become angry and not take it anymore, and snap back. But for NO reason EVER will a dobe attack its owner for no reason. And when you get a dobie, its all on how you raise it. Keeping it isolated from people and other animals will make it become afraid. let me tell you a bit about dobes!

They were "invented" for Guarding by a man who was a tax collector in Germany, named Louis Dobermann (short 1"N"). Who needed a dog to protect him in his runs accross town to collect taxes in the "scummy" neighborhoods. So He hand picked dogs like
The Rottweiler- was used in the development of the breed due to its massiveness and intelligence. This very solid dog also possessed great stamina, and had excellent tracking ability. Sometimes the Rottweiler strain can be seen in a Doberman with a "wavy" coat.
The Old German Pinscher (now extinct) - Black and tan, smooth coat, and energetic. Alertness and aggressiveness
The Beauceron- contributed size and color to the Dobermann bloodline. The Beauceron was a solidly built dog, very alert, and was known to be intelligent as well.
Sporting Dogs- was used to lengthen the head - attentive, loving, and territorial.
Weimaraner - Points, retrieves, good nose for tracking. Possible introduction of the gene for producing the blue Doberman.
Blue Dane - Ferocious - used for boar hunting.
English Greyhound - Would account for the black in color, additional height, stamina, and the speed of the Doberman. They do not have to be trained to guard their family and they are very Intelligent, Dobermans are the smartest breed of dog, you can look it up if you dont believe me. Them, and the german shepherd breed are both popular in shtuzund, and the doberman was invented with all these breedes so they can perform ANY job.The AKC quotes them as " Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient. " and also "The properly bred and trained Doberman has proved itself as friend and guardian, As is developed, its qualities of intelligence and ability to absorb and retain training brought it into demand as a police and war dog." http://www.akc.org/breeds/doberman_pinsc...
to read more about them, go here :http://www.akc.org/breeds/doberman_pinsc...
Also, you wouldn't be sorry. They dont shed, they are VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY easy to train because of their intelligence, Extremly humorus!!!!! Their Bark is very intimidating, and their bite is worse ONLY when needed. when trained properly. Also they are VERY Affectionate, ask any Dobe owner and they will tell you. All Breeders and dog experts will also tell you that they get their nicknames, "velcro" dogs for being soo affectionate. They love to follow you everywhere, and please. They love children and animals as with any other dogs, when they are familiar with them or just no afraid, or if an abused dobe, or any other dog for that matter, you dont know for a fact or not, if they have problems.
Dobermans and other dogs only get bad reps becuase of the stupid Idiots behind them.

-And for training or ANY problems you could E-mail me any time at all. I can help you over the internet with it so you dont have to spend money. I really dont mind. I love helping people, and i know lots about dobermans i can write a book! so be free to E-mail me if you need more help on deciding, or getting. I know many breeders and rescues! Please, get ahold of me, I can help you with ANYTHING!!!!. =]

half wolf half husky will do if you live in the cold areas if not generally something big a jack russell may be a little protective but the point is what can the dog do to stop attacking party

i German shepherd is used by most military

its not so much about traits its the bark bite and strength that matters i know of a toy poodle that would attack any one trying to hurt this kid when i was back in like public school the poodle didn't stand a chance against mesha but it tried the kid in question tried to attack me my dog barked and faked an attack and the poodle went after mesha needless to say the poodle didn't last mesha was half wolf half husky she also had attack training(teaches the dog the best places to bite to bring down a target) as for controlling a dog assert dominance but not abuse the dog becomes to nippy throw it in a head lock and roll it on its side pin it down it will calm but do not hit it you want to assert dominance in a method that will not get you marked as an enemy but the alpha

do some research and find out the biggest baddest meanest dog you can find(physical traits personality you can form) and get a puppy of that breed treat it with care and make sure you show the dog who's boss with out resorting to violence again never pity the dog and don't give it a lot of treats make it work for them treats are thank yous not just anything you give them

make sure the dog doesnt get fat take it for a walk every day or rather a run or jog if you treat it like you are the alpha and in need or protection it will protect and remember size dose matter think of a dog that will beat the crap out of something dogs don't always resort to violence or biting some times they will resort to their natural ways of pin the target

Unfortunately what you are asking for is a dog that is territorial. This would be a problem because you cannot control it. People confuse this with being protective. I often hear this: my dog is so protective of me that when anyone comes close to me it becomes aggressive. This is bad as I have stated you cannot control it. This also extends to other areas. It will be aggressive if it is laying on your bed and someone approaches. Oh, you say that this is what you want. Even if it is someone you want to approach? A dog that is territorial is a badly behaved dog. Protection dogs are trained in that behavior and controllable. But, they are expensive. You are looking at up to two years of training and over $10,000. I think what you want is a basic trained dog that will bark at noises but will instantly respond to the "quiet" command. This will be a better pet for you.

A really good breed is the blue healer or also known as the australian cattle dog. They protected their heards at night so it is kinda like guarding you. Here are some more basenji, elkhound, harrier, irish red and white setter, hovawart. Also I know you dont want a big dog, but a female rottwieler is great. I have a male and he is the best dog. Obiedient, loyal, loves exercise (agility!). Also very protective. People think they are scary b/c you see them in the movies. But I love them! Or get a mixed breed with a rottie in them and they can run smaller.

I think any dog would protect their owner if they were put in a threatening position. We have Golden Retrievers, they let out loud barks that would scare any person, especially at night. But are very friendly and love people. I think dogs sense when you are uncertain of a situation and will respond to your body language. One day I was walking one of my girls and 4 teenage boys came up from behind and were being stupid, I got scared and straight away she started growling and showing her teeth, they soon went on their way with out another word. She has never done this again but I have never felt threatened the way I did that day.

Doberman Pinschers are excellent!!! Very protective & intelligent, as well as affectionate!!! The females usually weigh around 65lbs so that would only be 5lbs over your suggested weight. Your small house will be just fine if you have a yard and/or able to exercise her!! Good luck!!!

i know you said med.size dog but i just have to vouch for the pitbull. i had a large, very scary looking red pit w/ yellow eyes. he was extremely smart and protective. all he had to do was look at someone with those wicked eyes and even the biggest, baddest man [or animal] would run. but to my family and 2 year old son he was a loyal, loving family member. we lost him in Nov. but if a pitbull is raised responsibly, i think they are the best all around breed. good luck with your decision...
