My brother in law , 6 years ago had about 70% kidney function left. Now one is shut down and the other is at 40% . He had surgery this morning to help stop further shut down. No guarantees. He needs a transplant, however and unfortunately the family is reluctant to donate because his problem was casued from drinking , and we know that he will not stop. The family has basically said "why give one up when he is going to ruin that one too" Kind of harsh and said, but I can see the point. My question is how long can someone go on with this type of damage without having a transplant?

No one can say for a fact? He could live on 40% of kidney function for life with no further deterioration. Or in two weeks time the kidney could shut down. Likewise he might have a massive heart attack tonight? Their really is no answer and even the Doctors would not be able to tell you. Just enjoy the days you have with him.

While 40% of a kidney beats none it isn't good. Can they not put him on dialysis? My dad had kidney failure and lived on dialysis for 13 yrs. Then only pneumonia did him in. I can see why family doesn't want to go thru the pain and effort for what they consider to be nothing. And they won't put an alcoholic on the list. Depending on where he stays hospital vs home he has one to 3 months.
