I am not making light of your question but it brought to mind an old joke that has been around for years.
1. First sign of craziness is hair on your knuckles.
As a person peers down at their own hands that's when you tell them what the second sign is. Looking for it.
Actually crazy is not a term that is acceptable in this day and age. Barbaric and hurtful. Mental illness is not something to scoff at. There are many signs and only a licensed professional should be telling you.

Serious Answer:
1.) Unkempt physical appearance, as in cleanliness and grooming. A person who is evaluated is usually first evaluated on personal care.
2.) Loss of interest in personal relationships. Withdrawing from family and friends indicates possible paranoia, loss of self esteem, or hiding the illness.
3.) Loss of ability to function performing normal routines. This may mean something fairly benign such as not going to school when you are depressed after a break-up, to something very severe, like hiding in a dark room because you are having auditory hallucinations.
Many mental illnesses become apparent in the age range of 18-30. There is help. There are many, many people who want to help. There are millions of people going to work each day with mental illness that is treated and allowing them to have normal lives. We all realized at some point that we could work with a doctor to manage illness. Look in your phone book and call the local hospital or clinic and tell the person who answers you would like a mental health referral. That person will lovingly direct you to a provider. Take care of yourself. Many people who will never get to meet you are out here, caring about people like you.

3) Difficulty recognizing reality, past present and future -- A person should be able to "say as you do, and to do as you say"
&
4) Intense thoughts of harm or death to self or others
While every mental illness is expressed in different symptoms, these are 4 of the most common symptoms, and what police and other emergency workers are trained to look for.

It really depends on the illness. Signs include, but are not limited to, personality changes, moodiness, depression, lose/gain of appetite, and problems coping with daily activities. These are just a few. One of problem people face when dealing with mental illnesses is the lack of or desire to participate or do things they use to do.

It really depends on the illness. However, according to the DSM-IV in order to have any mental disorder it has to have a major impact on your life and impair your everyday function in some way.
