To Jehovah’s Witnesses the Kingdom Hall is the most important building in any community. It may of itself be attractive in design and construction, but even if comparatively modest in external appearance, it is greatly appreciated as a center of true worship and the hub of theocratic activity in the community. It gives evidence that the Kingdom good news is being preached locally. It is a place that provides genuine spiritual refreshment and instruction for all those who are conscious of their spiritual need.—Matt. 5:3.

Many people have never inquired to find out what the Witnesses are actually doing about community affairs. Obviously there is more than one way to offer help.
Some do it by establishing institutions—hospitals, homes for the elderly, rehabilitation centers for drug addicts, and so forth. Others may volunteer to go right to the homes of people and offer appropriate help as they are able. That is what Jehovah’s Witnesses do.
We have observed that there is something that can transform a person’s entire outlook on life, and that is knowledge of what the Bible shows to be the real purpose of life and what the future holds.

We would like to see conditions improve, would we not? May I ask, How do you feel about what Jesus Christ himself did? Would you say that the way he went about helping people was practical? . . . We try to follow his example.

JWs help in all sorts of ways. In disasters, JW trucks are the first to arrive. They rebuild not only Kingdom Halls and our homes but others not JWs.

What is that saying? Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to fish and feed them for a lifetime.

Our main purpose is Jesus' command to give hope to the people by the good news of Jehovah's Kingdom. It means life to people. Sure we have food and clothing in disasters and help in communities where we can without making such a show of it as others do. That only helps in the short run. Helping others to get life everlasting, now that lasts forever.

It is true that Jesus' earthy ministry included not only feeding the crowds spiritual food, but also feeding them food to fill their stomachs! He had compassion for the people and knew that a person could not absorb important spiritual food without something in their stomachs! I am not aware of any kind of food bank or clothing drive or anything else they have done for the people in a community. There may be some rare instances, but I do not think they even have any programs to feed any of the poor in their churches. There are some generous individuals that go there... I suppose, but as an organization they do not have feeding programs that I am aware of! I could be wrong, but I do not think so!

Believe me, I doubt if you will get anyone near the caliber of Mother Teresa out of these people! The Kingdom Hall around our house has a bunch that is dressed in the most expensive outfits you can imagine! It is too bad that they just cannot go to church clean and respectable, and donate all the money they put into dressing to impress each other into some sort of program to at least feed their own! The church I go to helps the poor and needy and feeds hundreds(sometimes thousands) of families every month in the community. Without regard to what religion you are! People are welcomed to come to church dressed in jeans and a clean shirt! All are welcome!

I never could understand this bunch!

JW's dont believe in helping those less fortunate.Even tho Jesus says to love one another and"If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:17-18

And for the person that said that the Catholic Church does not help those less fortunate, you are wrong. Catholic Charities is one of the biggest charitable organizations in the world. The Catholic Charities are usually the first ones there to any disaster, even before the Red Cross. And Catholic Charities dont ask for anything back, like The Red Cross does. The Catholic Church feeds and clothes and provides water and medication to the majority of all the starving people in the world.

We do have arrangements in place to provide aid to those who are affected by natural disasters and the like.

For example, we were some of the first people to arrive in New Orleans to offer aid to the residents of the city after Hurricane Katrina. We are still actively involved in the rebuilding efforts in the area (my mother in law and sister in law were down there only a couple of months ago building houses on the bayou).

Kingdom Halls are places of worship for us. Jesus told us to concern ourselves with spiritual things before material things, but that does not mean that we ignore people in need.

EDIT: Martin S, I read your "list" and let me tell you, you are SO OFF on most of those. I guess I'm in trouble since I'm an organ donating former high school drama performer!

Because that's what happens when you start a church that's full of legalism and lacking in the love of Christ Jesus whom they demean by demoting the eternal Son of God to the status of a created angel. You attract a lot of people who are like the hypocritical Pharisees who looked down on other people.

Because Jesus did not command his followers to "Go, therefore, and provide food, clothing and shelter".

See Matrthew 28:19. 20

We preach, teach and baptize according to the command of our leader, Christ.

Same reason Catholic churches don't--they don't care about everyday people.
But at least the witnesses do SOMETHING (bear witness)...
