My adoptive son has recently been diagnosed with both PTSD and Conduct disorder due to his abuse. Raeding the definition of Conduct Disorder does not fit him except for his outburst of anger. Can the two be interelated ?

To be honest it depends on his age. The younger the child, the more ambiguously his symptoms might manifest. If he's still young, it's probably an incorrect diagnosis, and he might better fit criteria for Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Truth be told, young kids don't fit the DSM-IV categories as much as mental health professionals would have you believe. If his presenting disorder is in response to whatever trauma he experienced, you and the professionals might as well disregard the CD/ODD symptoms because they're probably just a side-effect of his difficulty managing this post-traumatic stress.

Overlap of PTSD with CD: Nothing.

Conduct Disorder is diagnosed completely on behavior. Aggression to people/animals, destruction of property, deceitfulness, theft and other serious violations of rules are the ONLY criteria by which CD is diagnosed. Nothing about moods, emotions, thoughts or anything else. It's all about behavior.

PTSD goes after symptoms like avoidance of triggering stimuli, arousal (startle response, hypervigilance, loss of concentration), and especially reexperience (flashbacks, dreams, intrusive thoughts, and physiological reactivity).
