I know I'm depressed, I have know for quite some time and everyone else knows as well. But the idea of going to a shrink and taking meds... its seems fake to me. Its seems like I'm running from myself. Is this a rational way of thinking?

I don't think it's rational because if you had an infection of some kind and it wasn't getting better you'd go to the doctor. The same thing can be applied to your current condition. You can never get back the time you've spent in depression and I think you should realize there is a lot of happiness in life. Please give yourself the chance to find out. Wanting help to get you over a rough spot is not fake. It will help you find out what's going on so you can get past it and go on with your life!

For most people it is a rational way of thinking..if your not willing to get help. If you don't want to go to counseling then might I suggest what my counselor told me?! Start a daily journal..write everything in it..I stress DAILY! If your upset write it down.. if your happy.. write it down.. whatever just write it down.. that way if your mad something is bothering you, you can go back and figure out the whys and even think of a way to solve it.. You already know your depressed.. why are? You don't always need meds to feel better but having someone to talk to sure does help mainly if they are from the outside cuz then they have no judgment. Trying to help yourself is always a good thing but sometimes that can get a little crazy too. If and when you feel totally lost.. do seek some help.. until then write..keep your chin up and everything will work out! Oh yeah there are some great support groups on line as well you can join.. that helps too and if you blog.. that is almost like an on line journal.. some people have really good advise! OK I rattled to much.. Been there have it gonna do it again! LOL I love my roller coaster ride!

It's rational, because god knows a lot of people get that feeling. It's like you can't help but wonder how people survived prior to our medicated society.. I believe that if you really want to stop being depressed, there are other ways of going about that rather than medications. For some people, the medecine really does work, and it works well. But for others, therapy, or just willing themselves to work through their emotions is fine as it is.

it's really up to you. it's understandable to think that the medications seem fake. From personal experience, I didn't think that it really was, and their medications have gotten better from what some of my friends say. You never know. but like i said, it's your decision. just take care of yourself.

if you know your depressed , is it a deep rooted problem or is it something that came out of the blue ,, if you know wha your depressed ( it could be many factors , like age ) then you should sort out your problems at the root , there are people around who can help you relate im sure, but if you really have no idea why you are then see someone ( shrink ) who willl be able to regress you and get to the real cause of your feelings and then you will be able to overcome and move on , but you need help if not from a shrink then from someone , even if they just listen to you

i think the sameeee exact way! i mean i have bi-polar(manic depression) disorder as well as anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia and a few other disorders. like i wasn't born with them but ive developed them because of some life changing things that have happened to me during my childhood. yes these disorders interfere with my life alot and ive been recommended and forced to be on meds and therapy. even though i have a sadistic way of thinking and im not all "there" lol i feel and look normal...im not gonna do anything drastic. just because my way of thinking and feeling is diffrent then other people it doesn't mean i have to have medication shoved down my throat so that i can be "made" or "fixed" into just another citizen. im fine with who i am. and im sure you are to. who are they to say that we NEED to be fixed...hell who are they to say we're broken. yes we both have a rational way of thinking...its the shrinks that have the wrong way of thinking. if someone feels they need they meds they should get them. but as for other people who feel that its all fake shouldnt. its completly rational and your not alone with this.

Hi
It is difficult to admit that you know that you have depression and it takes courage and insight to admit that. That is a good first step. I know that it is difficult to seek help because of societies stigma with mental health issues. I thnk it is important to understand that depression is a real illness just like any other illness and can be treated successfully.
I hope you have a good primary care physician that can refer you to someone for help. You deserve to feel good and not have this chemical imbalance. It isn't fake it is your feelings and you have every right to feel better. I wish you good luck and I hope that you will try to get a referral. I wish you the best

If you truly suffer from clinical depression, than you are totally wrong. Clinical depression is caused by a chemical imbalance inside the brain. It is caused by genetics, and you are not at all responsible for this. Medication will simply help to correct the imbalance, and help you to deal with reality on a normal level. There is no reason to be afraid of going to a Psychiatrist, or of medication.

Yep, it's rational! Who wants to go through life thinking they are only okay because they use medication and because a counselor tells them they are (or aren't)?

Okay, so there are a lot of things you can do to start fighting your depression (w/out drugs or counselors, though they can help). One easy thing I would suggest is to join sparkpeople.com - - you will find all kinds of resources, movitation, people, etc. there that can help you out.

Either way, take care of yourself, and do what is best for you! Contact me via Messenger or E-mail, if anyone wants.
