Its called Vesak/Visakha/Wesak Puja Day...

This year is celebrated on two occassions (fortunately)... because of the leap year's effect on this year's May, resulting it in having two full moons (one on the beginning and the other is at the end of the month May).

According to traditions, it is described as the 'full moon of May', so different traditions have different interpretations on the date.

Anyhow, for most Buddhists, it is basically a day where it is 'celebrated' with lots of people visiting the temple to make merits, donations and some would observe the 8 or 10 precepts along with their meditation practices ---usually most people do at any given time, but on this day, it will be done to remember the Buddha and his teachings, and observing the nature of his teachings.

This is also the day that most people are able to perform the bath/flower bath to the Buddha statues (this is done out of devotion/tradition/cultural aspects, rather than having to do with any of the Buddhistic teachings).

That's pretty much of what it is like on this day... why don't you come join us?

:-)

On the Tibetan calendar the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha is celebrated on the 23rd of May. Dunno when the Theravadans celebrate... everybody might be different. I'll be at home doing my Buddhist things... which I don't oft go into since most people don't understand.
