I'm not sure, but don't think being a sommelier is a joke. They are highly trained.
The highest rank in the wine world is the title "Master of Wine" and is EXTREMELY hard to achieve, which is just below the grandmaster.
Sommeliers aren't masters, but they are still very proficient.

A sommelier actually needs to take classes and be awarded the title of Sommelier by some Sommelier guild or something. I don't think this recognition is offered in the world of fromage.

If Napa is any indication, they're called cheese mongers. Sometimes it's rolled in with charcuterie.
